Even though it's not solely him, Sounds of Instruments 2 is a great album.

I mean, there's an anime director named "Hiroshi Watanabe"; there's a member of a certain J-rock band named like that, too; and we got our Hiroshi Watanabe in Bemani, too. Are they one, or they're different persons at all?

4th and 5th style Taka was great. Absolute, Flowers for Albion, Small Waves, Abyss, Final Countdown, V...I'll take these songs any day over the generic music he wrote in 9th and beyond.
Hiroshi Watanabe was great. Only he could make Love So Groovy sound like a real song. s.d.z. is severly underrated IMO.

personally I can't ever respect a man who does a song like "garden of love."

I don't see how you can like Small Waves, The Final Countdown, and Absolute, but dislike his stuff from later on. Flowers for Albion is amazing, though, and I think it's maybe his only good song on 4th.
Oni+> Reincarnation was good, yeah, and Tangerine Stream was good. That's why I basically meant "mostly" lame stuff prior to 4th. I still think his best tracks have been more recent (all of the D.J.SETUP songs, OML, Nageki, Ubertreffen, No.13, A, earth scape, and so on). I don't think V is a half-bad remix either but that's kind of an outlier.

I prefer Presto, Tangerine Stream, Flowers for Albion, 5.1.1., and 5.8.8.). I also like Inazuma and One More Lovely.
At the same time, I can list a lot of songs I don't like from him since 2002. AA. Rage against usual. Recollection. Melody Life. Candy Galy. Snow Storm. never... Moon. Looking for... All three of his Guitar Freaks songs. e-motion 2003 romantic style (the CORE Remix version is so much better). And then they brought back Quickening from Dance Maniax's grace. Blah.
And Colors sucks because the music is (IMO) generic and similar to his other trance works, the vocals are horrible, the video is stupid (and, for no reason, advertises for 6th style during it), and its note charts are way too saturated with notes, even on Light 7 / Normal!

to be fair, LESSON5, MOON and Noria are really terrible though and Taka should permanently abandon that style of music

Does anyone know if his later stuff evolved since?

It reminds me of Logical Dash: it sounds more like garbled sound effects than music. It was a bad song in DanceManiax, a bad song in DDR, beatmania the Final, IIDX 9th, and it should have NEVER been revived for the CS games, when infinitely better songs have yet to be seen since their sole CS appearance.
I don't quite hate Rage against usual, but I don't find it very interesting. I just plain don't like most IIDX rock music. It doesn't fit the series at all.
Snow storm is generic and I can't find anything cool about it aside from the pretty piano pieces. I have similar feelings for Pandora, aka Frozen Ray 2 with Japanese vocals.
