Default Otaku's Dream SImfile Contest 1 - otakusdream.com - OCT 13, 2009

Welcome to the first Contest in Otaku's Dream.

A majority of this contest is to keep people on track with a single difficulty level and allow people to place notes accordingly within a song, as well as identifying key notes in a song and viewing different methods of play. A song, one from the upcoming Fall 2009 anime season, will be used so as to give the sim-artist quick thinking, with the use of their sim-making skills, to make a chart from a new song that has "yet to be stepped".

Start of Contest (release of song/sim): OCT 13, 2009
At 12:00pm (noon) GMT, same day Beta3 is due. End of contest is approximately 1 week after.

Now let's go onto the RULES;
  • Link to OD forums about this contest here.
  • 1 Entry per person.
  • Anyone with access to the sim (via our forums or the website) can enter.
  • Entries are anonymous and randomized upon judging.
  • Be fair; Telling anyone what chart is yours during the contest gets you disqualified.
  • You may step for both Pad and KB, as these are separate categories.
  • You have exactly 3 (three) days (literally 72 hours) from song release to step only 1 (one) Singles chart with these restrictions:
  • Pad; Must be an 8-footer equivelant.
  • KB; Must be a 12-footer equivelant.
  • Video, BG, Banner, Lyrics, Song, and .sm chart will be provided upon start of contest.
  • Anything goes for notes; Hidden, Rolls, Lifts, and Mines are allowed.
  • Additional BPM changes and Stops are NOT allowed.
  • Sim will be synced in accordance with 2 or more computers (other than my own).
  • Submit only the .sm chart before the 3 days by either Forum PM (to LK4D4), IRC PM (also, to LK4D4), or e-mail (lk4d4@yahoo.com).
  • No discrimination during the contest.
  • You may remain anonymous if requested.

Prizes given for 1st and 2nd Place in both Pad and KB categories, and a "Most Unique yet Enjoyable" (meaning uses of Holds, Mines, Rolls, and Lifts [however, Hidden cannot be seen while playing SM, except in the editor, so be careful]). MUyE may also be among the 1st and 2nd place winners.

1st Place Prize: An Anime DVD Box Set* or a $25 Borders Gift Card. Their chart will also be included in the upcoming "Otaku's Dream Mix" Pack (formerly referred to as OD6).
2nd Place Prize: An Anime DVD* or Merchandise.
"Most Unique yet Enjoyable" Prize: An Anime DVD* or Merchandise.
Last Place Prize: "Ichi the Killer" DVD (region 2)... Trust me, you don't want this movie.
* = Among the following titles below.
(maximum for 1st place set at a $30 limit, 2nd place and MUyE at $10. Shipping and Handling will not be included in cost structure)

DVD Box Set Titles** Include:
Straight Jacket, Gunslinger Girls, Gungrave^, BALDR FORCE, Death Note Movie 1, 2 or 3, Karas, Grenadier, Suzuka, Murder Princess, Tenchi Muyo: Ryo Ohki, Tokko, His & Her Circumstances, and more titles likely to show in the next couple weeks!
** = Subject to change based on availability.
^ = Select titles suggest finding the set at a lower price as individual DVDs to keep with prize cost limit and to provide more titles to choose upon.

Small print: Judging has yet to be determined. If Public (forum Poll) then be fair; please don't get multiple accounts (friends, library computers, etc) to vote for your chart. Doing so could get your chart disqualified. We will be checking up on this. If Judge-Panel (a 3 person team in each category) then the charts will still be held anonymous, and any judge partaking in the contest cannot vote for their own chart. Please allow average of 4 weeks from end of contest for prize delivery. DVDs are R1 (Region 1) and unopened. Companies who own licenses to these titles own all rights and reserves. Prizes are purchased through dealers and are given as a gift through means of this non-lottery contest. No purchase for entering. We promise not to share information regarding address or other personal info taken in accordance with this contest, nor to solicit anyone with hoards of spam from "Otaku's Dream", less you are already a long-running member of OD then we can harass you for winning as you brag in front of the computer.

And now for the results:
Here are the people that submitted charts (in order of difficulty): thewhantahndestroyer, LK4D4, Chmurek, anonymous, Istugo15, SHAMEMARU.
Starting with Keyboard....
The requirement was to make something that was 12-footer. SHAMEIMARU has excellent structure but was too easy. The only one that came close was thewhantahndestroyer, but only because of the mines. However, even with the mines it still felt barely on-par with 12-footer status. Thus, sadly, no winners! Please practice more and use references next time.
Next we have Pad....
My good friend at the arcade was kind enough to help me judge these charts. We played each chart at least twice, always going back to recalculate scores and reconsider decisions, not to mention have the same mindset as the person who created the chart.
Going in order was thewhantahndestroyer. His chart filled with mines had very nice rhythm. Though you had several DoubleStepping (DS) sections that prevented your chart from becoming fully enjoyable. It was still a great chart and impressed me with the rolls to be a candidate in the "Most Unique yet Enjoyable" prize.
I was an obvious challenge to get across, as I already knew the song. But I played fair and restricted myself from further hearing the song and stepping the chart until the last day. My friend who helped me test (without any knowledge of who made what... still doesn't know) favorited my chart from the very beginning. But then came the other charts....
Another "famous" player that got a hold was Chmurek, whom I know from Best-Mix: Excellent job with this. You have really nice use of mines which became another "MUyE" entry.
There was an anonymous player that would not like to be known; regardless this person does very fine work (so I've seen from another contest). You have produced the same quality work that I've seen before, so good job. My friend placed this in the "MUyE" entry for your spin placements.
Finally there was Itsugo15... mines were nicely placed, rhythm and tempo very good, but your DS was incredible. The chart actually felt like a 9-footer. Without the mines would give this potential, but again; unenjoyable. Your chart did initially get a spot in "MUyE" though after physically playing we both felt it was our least favorite.

As for the scores, I have scored the following (for pad, as only pad was the only thing worthy of being in the 1st contest): 88/--/90/91/74 My friend: 85/96/90/96/10 And Voting was: 0/2/2/1/0
Not even counting my score I made upon myself, the results are as follows:

LAST PLACE: thewhantahndestroyer (KB entry) (you get yourself last place prize)

Most Unique yet Enjoyable: thewhantahndestroyer (Pad entry) (for the use of rolls and slight mines)

SECOND PLACE: Our Anonymous Entry

and finally...

FIRST PLACE: LK4D4

I only hope next Contest we hold with the same caliber presents better results and more entries. Good luck next time.
