Default Sporktoberfest '08, October 25th/26th - Colorado Springs

Sporktoberfest ‘08

Date: Saturday October 25th, 2008 - Sunday October 26th, 2008
Entry Fee: $10 per event
Tournament Organizers: Spork!, Razma
Location:
Bigg City
5825 Mark Dabling Boulevard
Colorado Springs, CO 80919

Included Tournaments:
DDR PA (Standard)
DDR PA (Heavy/Oni)
DDR Doubles PA (Heavy/Oni)
ITG MA

Intro:
Well, it’s that time of the year again. Snow is about to come, and keep us covered for another 5 months, Football season has started again, and I’m turning 22. Now, I know that none of the reasons above are a good reason to hold a tournament, but I figure, why waste a creative name such as Sporktoberfest? That being said, I welcome you to join me at Bigg City on October 25th and 26th for a weekend of high enjoyment!
There will be two DDR machines at this event, both running on Stepmania. Bigg’s machine, and mine. Both will be maintained the night before the event to ensure good tournament conditions. That being said, if any problems arise, please let us know. With two machines, we will be able to continue running the tournament while the other is checked for problems and maintained.
I will also be providing my ITG dedicab for this event. It will be around for the entire event, so feel free to play it, since it’s getting harder and harder to find a good condition ITG machine around Colorado. I just ask that you do NOT stomp on it. The sensors are and have been in good conditon, and I would rather not have to replace arrows and sensors after this event.
We plan on reserving a couple of the party rooms just outside of the arcade for this event, for people to crash in if they are tired, to play games with each other (IIDX, Mario Kart, Maybe Pop’n?). This will also provide a good room to stash anything that have brought that you would rather not lug around with you everywhere you go in the building.
For food, Bigg City has a rather decent Pizza buffet, though if that is not your thing, within a very decent driving distance there are several other places to eat. I don’t plan on making anyone go hungry, so if you are in a tournament that is being held at that moment, let me know, give me your phone number, and I will call you if you are not back in time.
Out of state entrants, while I can’t promise that I’ll have room at my place for everyone to crash, I hope to be able to at least provide rides and place to crash for a few of you. I’m sure there could be some relatively decent hotels around the area, but that’s considering the possibility that you aren’t out partying with everyone each night. Our community likes to hang out (as far as I know) and we are very welcoming, so give us a chance J

Anyways! On to the time line and rules!

Possible Timeline:
Saturday:
10am: Registration Opens
12pm: Qualifying for DDR PA (Singles [Standard-Heavy/Oni]
2pm: DDR PA (Standard) begins on both machines
6pm: DDR PA (Standard) ends, DDR PA (Heavy/Oni) Begins
11pm: DDR PA (Heavy/Oni) ends

Sunday:
11am: Qualifying for ITG MA and DDR Doubles PA
1pm: DDR Doubles PA Begins
4pm: ITG MA Begins
5pmDR Doubles PA ends
9pm: ITG MA ends
10:30pm: After tournament Village Inn trip, for extreme pie eating

The only part of this timeline I will not budge on is the registration on Saturday. You have from 10am-2pm to get in, register, pay your entry fees for whatever events you would like to. The registration is for both days events, so if you only intend to enter DDR Doubles or ITG, please show up at least in time to register on Saturday. If you are a standard player, and you show up after the beginning of the standard DDR PA tournament, we will allow you to enter, but you will be randomly seeded into the Heavy/Oni DDR PA tournament.

Qualifier:
The qualifier will be done a little differently this time around, however. Instead of using the qualifier to determine which division you belong in, you will give us that information when you register for the event. Sandbagging, however, is strictly prohibited. If you enter a division and it’s obvious that you belong in another division, we will immediately disqualify you from the easier division and randomly seed you into the higher division. Anyone who noticed any sandbagging is occurring needs to let either Razma or I know ASAP.
Anywho, the qualifier will be held using both machines for for maximum efficiency. The Biggs machine will be qualifying the Standard players, and my machine will be used for qualifying the Heavy/Oni players. The standard qualifier will be a certain 6 footer that appears on DDR Extreme, and the Heavy/Oni Qualifier will be either a 7 or and 8 footer that also appears on DDR Extreme. No custom songs for the first qualifier this time, guys!
For DDR Doubles PA, the qualifier will be an 8 footer that appears on DDR Extreme. I promise to make it as painless as possible, though I cannot promise that it won’t have its share of difficulty.
All three DDR Qualifiers will be announced on Wednesday October 22nd, 2008. This will give you 3 days to bone up on the qualifiers and help yourself seed well in the brackets.
The ITG Qualifier will be held a little differently. I will not decide what the qualifier is until the day of the tournament. Both players will play the song on EXPERT, not hard, and I will most likely hit Chance. Whatever song is given will be the qualifier. There are not a lot of songs in ITG, so bone up by going to the arcade or playing ITG PC.
With DDR, the Qualifier will go by Perfects only. With ITG, Percentage. If there is a tie in either game, I will have a second qualifier available to break said ties. If there is another tie, A custom song will make it’s way in. I can promise that the third qualifier will not be easy on anyone.

DDR PA (Standard-Heavy/Oni) RULES:
All entrants will be seeded due to their performance in the qualifier into their appropriate brackets.
Each round will consist of 3 songs. After a simple dice roll to determine sides, each player will tell me what song they would like to play. We will have a full list of all current playable songs with their individual difficulties near us. Each song is only playable once by each player, so if a song is chosen by one person in a round, neither player can play it again for the rest of the tournament, unless it is selected by Random. Scoring will be done thusly:

Perfect: +2
Great: +1
Good: 0
Boo: -2
Miss: -6
O.K.: +2

The freeze arrow metrics WILL be loosened before the tournament so freezes will not let go of easily. This is help with the recurring problem in tournament settings.
The first player to successfully win 2 songs against their opponent will be deemed the winner. If both songs are played, and both players won a song, a third song chosen using random will be played. Don’t give up though! The entire tournament is in Double Elimination format, so even if you lose once, you still have a chance to win.
Using the bar is acceptable during the entire event. The bar is there, probably not originally for the use it does have, but it’s part of the game. Take advantage of it if you need the extra help.
During this event, several modifiers will be allowed to help, but may will not. Here is a small list of modifiers that will NOT be allowed in this event:

Stealth
Mirror
Left
Right
Shuffle
Random
Little
Stream
Skippy
Echo
Freeze off

All other modifiers will be permitted.
Each division will be played on both machines. With both machines in play, the tournament will go faster, and smoother, making it possible to finish off both DDR PA single events in one day.
Prizes will be given out at the end of each division thusly:

1st place: 50% of entry fees, Special Prize
2nd place: 25% of entry fees, Special Prize
3rd place: 10% of entry fees

The remaining 15% of the entry fees will be going to Bigg City for allowing us to host this event, and towards maintenance/repairs.

DDR DOUBLES PA (Heavy/Oni) RULES:
All entrants will be seeded due to their performance in the qualifier into their appropriate brackets.
Each round will consist of 3 songs.
This division will be used on both machines, which will be separated far enough away from each other that no extra noise interference will be present. Each player will decide on their song, and play their individual song on a different machine. After scores from each individual song are tallied up, the players must switch machines, and play the song that their opponent chose. If each player wins a song, a third song will be chosen using random. The first player to win 2 songs is deemed the winner.
We will have a full list of all current playable songs with their individual difficulties near us. Each song is only playable once by each player, so if a song is chosen by one person in a round, neither player can play it again for the rest of the tournament, unless it is selected by Random. The pump machine is an exceed 2, IN pretty terrible condition. I like the mix, but it would take an absolute overhaul for the most part to make it tournament worthy. New sensors, probably new monitor.

The IIDX machine is an 8th style, they COULD run a tourney on there, I left this thread open so people could give suggestions.

I could run pump, but I doubt people would be happy with the machine, and I have no idea how to run a IIDX tourney. If someone else wants to run it, be my guest.

Cool, a tournament in colorado springs. It's nice to know that there are some players here. Chances will be that I'll compete in the Singles Oni event.

Also, it's a shame that Mr.Biggs is so out of date.
I'm going to it'z in a couple of weeks to see how their arcade is doing.

The only thing that really is out of date is the Pump. We're working on upgrades for everything else, keep in touch, though

And there are a TON of players in Colorado Springs. The Biggs crew is close to 15 people alone.

I'd like to go to this, depending on how things pan out with my job. A couple of questions, though:

-I've been to a couple of tournaments before, but none with a Standard divison. How do you divide that up? I don't want to sandbag, but I honestly don't know where i would belong in theory. I usually play on heavy, but I can only do a handful of 9-foot songs, I can only AA a couple of 6-foot songs, and my stamina is terrible because I've been sick off and on for the past several months and unable to practice. :/ If that would still put me in the heavy division I should probably skip it, since I'd end up eliminated within a couple of rounds anyway.

-Do you happen to know if anyone from Kansas is interested in coming? I'd be driving if I came, and I would rather not drive 7 hours alone if possible. All of my friends that play are worse than me and would probably have no interest. :/

That would put you into heavy in theory, but I'm most likely expanding the standard division to include the lighter heavy players such as yourself.

I heard rumors of a group of kansasans coming, but I am unaware of who it would be. If I find out, though, I will most definitely let you know though
