Cool Yet Another DDR Tournament at Maplewood Mall, MN (03/15/08)

Due to quite the demand of players who come to Aladdin's Castle in Maplewood, I've been brought to the need to run yet another tournament. Hopefully this time, we'll get more than 14 players although I'm not complaining. The rules are going to be a little different this time around in order to hopefully entice more people to enter:

Qualifying Round:
All players will be playing a predetermined song (which will be announced during registration) which will allow seeding for the tournament. All Modifiers are chosen by player and are allowed so long as they don't modify the number of arrows or direction (i.e. shuffle, cut). In the very unlikely case that we get more than 32 people registered, all who fall below the 32 line post qualifiers will be dropped with no refund.

Tournament Rules:
Double Elimination: Because of this, we're going to have to move quickly so please try to keep an eye on when you'll be up and plan to eat and such around this.

Perfect Attack: Unlike last tournament, the total number of perfects after all 3 songs will determine the winner for the round.

The Higher Seed will have choice of 1st Song and 3rd Song or 2nd Song and Side.

Mods: Here's where things get a little interesting. I will have an impartial judge pick a mod out of a hat and all players must abide by this mod for the ENTIRE ROUND. Players may then choose whatever mods they wish that will only apply to themselves (no mods that modify the number or placement of arrows again). During Semi-Final and Final rounds, 2 Mods will be chosen.

Pad Disputes: Now that I get a full month+ of testing on the pad, there shouldn't be much of a problem here though it still happens. Pad Disputes can only occur if the following are all true: Step(s) counted were below a Great, the step(s) would've resulted in a different winner, and if multiple steps are obviously pad misses (if it's only 1 or 2, it doesn't have to be obvious but anymore should show something). In the result of this, players will switch sides and replay the song.

Hat Mods:
1x (If picked with 1.5x in Semi-Finals/Finals, repicked)
1.5x (If picked with 1x in Semi-Finals/Finals, repicked)
Flat (If picked with Vivid in Semi-Finals/Finals, repicked)
Vivid (If picked with Vivid in Semi-Finals/Finals, repicked)
Shuffle (If picked with Mirror in Semi-Finals/Finals, repicked)
Mirror (If picked with Shuffle in Semi-Finals/Finals, repicked)
Boost
Dark
Reverse

Registration, Entry Fee, and Prizes:
Date: Saturday, 03/15/08
Since we have a qualifying round, there's no preregistration.
Registration and Qualifying begins at 10 a.m. and ends at Noon.
Entry Fee is $10 ($8 goes to pot if less than 32 players, $9 goes to pot if 32 players or more)
You will play your qualifier immediately after you register.
Round 1 will begin at 12:15.
Payout is as follows: 60% to 1st; 25% to 2nd; 15% to 3rd

Location:
Aladdin's Castle
Maplewood Mall, MN 55109

Hopefully I didn't forget anything this time.

...lol...

3 Things I forgot to mention:

1st off: I figured this rule is pretty obvious so I kinda overlooked it but, players cannot pick the same song throughout the entire tournament. If it is chosen by an opponent or through random, that's fine.

Also: In the event of a tie between players, a 4th song will be selected via random and this will go on until the tie is broken.

Finally, the DDR Supernova machine at the Maplewood Mall will be set at Join Premium until the tournament (and possibly beyond since it's been like that for a while) in order to encourage players to practice. If there are any complaints with the pads, please post them here so that I can address them immediately. Thanks and have fun ^^

You guys really need to have a tournament when I'm back in the Minneapolis area this summer. I'd love to come by and at least observe or maybe help run things. I doubt though that I'm in any shape to compete though. ^_^;

Update time:
I hadn't even realized its getting so close to the tournament so I didn't even take work off for it XD. Don't worry though. I'll find someway to get out ^^.

Anyway, I have to ask a favor to players. If a group of experienced players could come to the mall Friday like around 4ish to test the pads and help me correct any errors, that'd be great. I'll gladly give free credits for the trouble.

Info on tourney: This is my first time running a tourney with a qualifying round so bear with me. The qualifying song will be between 7 - 9 difficulty and will probably be a "difficult" PA song so just a hint for players.

Hopefully this runs well so we can have more interesting rules DDR tournaments. Good luck all!

P.S. Jack, you suck at battle mode. You need practice...

left arrow 1p side needs fixing, it enjoys giving almosts when stepping hard. excessive vibrations cause it to misfire. also, the cable on the front of the pad needs to be repaired, every once in a while when it gets bumped the left arrow on the player 2 side sticks.

my buddy casey and i fixed the pads somewhat on tuesday. we were getting AAA's again and i got 5 greats on max me mix to give you an idea of how well we fixed them. the 1p side's left and up arrow were still acting retarded but we figured we could deal with those quick on saturday. also the up arrow on the 2p side was acting funky. again, can be fixed quick saturday. ac-dizzy, are you dan? cause you're definition of "good pads" is horrible. the girl at the counter said you had approved them tournament worthy, bullshit.

yeah i was there earlier today and had some problems with the up arrow on the 2p side like you said tim. it acts like the sensor closest to the middle of the pad needs to be cleaned, because whenever i didnt hit it dead on, it gave me a boo. 1p side seems to be good, i only got a few pad almosts in about 8 rounds of play.

I have two questions about the rules because I'm nitpicky like that.

This says that I cannot choose the same song twice even if I select it on different step charts (i.e., heavy and challenge). Is this correct?

Note: I'm assuming that all songs may be played on heavy and challenge. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

  2. Is there any penalty for failing a song?

Remember that really deep fisty-shaped hole in the wall next to the DDR machine?

Yeah apparently there was a huge argument about the very same question which lead to that hole...

And the funny thing is, the argument was never concluded with a proper answer.
