Bridge collapses into Mississippi - World - smh.com.au

I'm looking at pictures of it now, it looks completely devastating. Fortunately, it's not due to terrorism.

My mom came into my room and told me about this earlier. It's pretty crazy, did anyone make it out of their cars?

I wasn't anywhere near the bridge at the time, and as far as I know, all of my friends and family in Minneapolis are OK.

Still scary to think about though and see the damage...

Quote from the iwon article.

Quote:
Rescuers called off the search as nightfall made it too dangerous to search the waters, which were filled with chucks of the mangled bridge and at least 50 vehicles in the water.

"We think there are several more vehicles in the river we can't see yet," Clack said, adding that the likelihood of finding survivors was slim.
They are gonna find alot of dead people sadly.

From what I saw on the news today, they've accounted for most of the people in the vehicles that were on the bridge when it collapsed. Most of them are unhurt or only have minor injuries - if I recall correctly, the guy that drowned actually was going in to help. I saw cars in the water, but I think most of them were on the bridge itself; the bridge landed in the water, and the cars landed on the bridge.

My dad and I take that bridge to and from work every day. My sister drove home over it about half an hour before it went down. None of us were anywhere near it at the time, though, so I think we can consider ourselves lucky. But I can't imagine what it's going to do to the rush hour traffic - that bridge is the only way into and out of Minneapolis in that area, and there are no other highways that are even nearly capable of handling the amount of traffic that goes through there every day.

No terrorism or anything, just looks like a case of too much construction to do in too little time, a little didn't-see-it-coming regarding the structural integrity of the bridge (it was inspected in both '05 and '06 with little alarm), and about 50 cars' worth of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

In other related news, my morning commute is going to suck for a long time now.

Boy, I'm getting similar memories to these situations nowadays.

I remember a part of a freeway somewhere in Oakland (or was it San Francisco? I don't really remember now...) collapsing (Read: Burn down). Good news: Not that many people were hurt (the person that was the accidental cause of it was injured, but was okay afterwards). Bad news: it made it rather difficult to get to jobs and key places. Apparently many workers use that piece of the freeway to get to work.

The great news: It wasn't due to terrorism, either.

But, on the topic, I'm rather curious as to how the bridge gave in. I'm not sure if it has to do with the repairs, or if it was just natural wear and tear.

Probably too early to tell.

CNN was able to get some footage from a security camera that shows how fast the bridge fell. It's really scary to watch.

The bridge was under construction from what I heard on the radio. Which would most likely have somewhat compromised its structural integrity.

That's the same thing I said. I was gonna be pissed if it was terrorist related. I bet you $5 the terrorists wait until the presidential inauguration to pull some shit.

From what they said and showed, it was wear and tear. There was rust and rain spots on the wire underneath holding the bridge up. I just heard about it today.
