The care's quality for the most part isn't horrible. My interpretation of her (admittedly vague, accusatory, and ultimately ineffective) argument was that she was addressing the accessibility of it for those who for one reason or another don't have insurance, which is at the root of the whole discussion.

It's a distorted talking point for opponents of the reform to bring up that, if I remember right, had something to do with exactly one small town someplace in bumfuck nowhere. It's not pulled totally out of his ass but it's close.

And if it was a compliment to a black officer it must've been favoritism for his own race lmao! All the emphasis on race is silly.

Well that's the thing, this isn't completely made up, it's just really twisted out of what the original story was.

If anyone remembers, Glenn Beck actually did a radio show a few years ago that seemed mainly focused on comedic bits, not politics. He wasn't "holding my stomach with tears in my eyes" funny, but it was decently entertaining, and I would listen to it every once in a while. He obviously still does a radio show, but I understand that it's basically a conservative political talk show. A real underexposed market in radio for sure...

I don't get why people get their news from pundits anyways. I always just use Google News because you can get hundreds of different sources on a story with the click of your mouse, so its extremely easy to get stories from all points of view. I also don't have to sit through 15 minutes of commercials.

I don't know if this is sarcasm but there is an enormous number of people who treat the likes of Beck and Limbaugh as legitimate sources of news information (possibly that was your point, I can't tell!!)

Yeah, I was being sarcastic considering that almost every radio talk show host I've ever heard of have been conservative or conservative leaning :P.

yeah, the other day I was watching a bit of coverage of protests against the reform, and it occurred to me that this, like almost everything else people get really up in arms about, is mostly a fight between the haves and the have-nots.

Fox News' Glenn Beck loses advertisers | U.S. | Reuters

Let's break this situation down a bit.

Television programs (like on Fox, not PBS) make money primarily through advertisements. They sell the time to the advertisers with a price based on ratings. Thus, higher ratings yield higher time-slot values. News programs are also bound by this, so they want to run stories that people will watch, and hence sensationalism.

But now, with Glenn Beck's little tantrum, advertisers are pulling their money, and not for lack of ratings. Fox now has three options:

1) Charge far less for the advertising that goes on during Beck's show, or
2) Sit on their hands and do nothing, hoping other advertisers keep paying, or
3) Yank him and replace him with someone else who won't make statements like calling the President of the US a racist.

I'm willing to bet that if Beck isn't fired soon, he's on extremely thin ice with the corporate higher-ups. If he does stick around, he'll be much more careful about what he says for a while, probably issue a public apology.

It's not political correctness at work here, folks... IT'S CAPITALISM!

My boss sincerely thinks that Fox News is a reliable and accurate source of information

So occasionally he'll come in and start telling me that health care reform will force small employers to fire employees above the insurance cutoff and people in Washington will decide what treatments we get and all old people will be required to take classes about euthanasia

I haven't really been following politics/the news much lately but that appears to be at least a mild exaggeration of what has actually been suggested

I haven't heard about the small employers forcing out employees. There have been talks of a requirement of all but the small businesses to have a form of government insurance on a corporative/business level (government/UHC dental plan et al). I cannot be certain with the details or the truth of the statement as it was a quick bullet point mentioned on a CBS sunday news report about the reform, along with dismissing misconstruements and bringing up the worries of the public at large.

The aforementioned "death panels", as Sarah Pailn referred them to, is a heavy misinterpretation. Personally, I thought the "death panels" were an exaggeration of the purported UHC medical pecking order, that elderly and terminal patients would be given lower priority for treatments compared to other people -- a sort of Social Darwin Health Care, as it were. It turns out it's part of the proposed reform of having consultation and advance medical directives (i.e. living will and testament) with your doctor and lawyer once you are passed a certain age or if you get diagnosed with a terminal or potentially terminal ailment like cancer. Basically, a means of situating bequests and future procedure.

Yeah, I did some reading up on that last night. It confirmed what I had sort of assumed, which is that the proposal is actually that Medicare should cover death counseling, or whatever one might wish to call it. Basically, every 5 years, or more often if you're in poor health, terminally ill, or whatnot, Medicare will pay for you to take a class/whatever about your options with regards to end-of-life care; aggressively treat as long as possible, take a shorter but potentially more comfortable route, etc., and what to expect from any given option. It's rather a far cry from "forcing everyone to go to euthanasia class when they get old and refusing to give them life-prolonging treatments even if they want it," which is what these pundits seem to be standing up on their hind legs and braying about.
