gotta love our priorties | Honestly...does a view get your car to work? No! I don't want to have to push my car downhill, so they'd better start drilling.

There are way too many retarded people out there (my mom / older sister included) who have switched to regular 87 octane for their vehicles (2208 Mercedes Benz E550 / C350, respectively). They are saving a few bucks now, but their vehicles are going to run crappier than giving the engines the premium they require.
If your car requires premium, stay on it. If not, you're wasting your money on premium.

You know that oil dependency is one the greatest threats to not only our economy as a country, but our environment as well? Not only in the fact of global warming, but offshore drilling hurts the ecosystems of everything around it, which can interrupt not only us environmentally, but also economically. We fish in our water, and if the ecosystems of the fish we collect are disrupted, the fish market will decline, let alone hundreds of thousands of environmentalists will be pissed off. Not only fish, but other animals are watched by watchdog groups. We can't risk letting countless species be put at risk just because you wanna be lazy and drive down the street D:
And not only that but those pretty beaches are one of the main sources of our tourist economy. Without them and the weather we have, California wouldn't be California.
So you know what? Find you're own damn oil and stop thinking about your own selfish needs. Take the bus/train/carpool/mass transit like some smart Californians/New Yorkers/Anyone else who was smart enough to start decent mass transit.

In short, I don't care where gas prices are. The difference between gas at $3 to $4 is maybe $15 a tank. Cut out the Starbucks and you'll be ok. Cut out the cable tv and you'll be fine. Cut out one designer pair of jeans and you'll be fine. If your budget is so shoestring that you can't cushion a $15 per tank deviance (or ~$60 a month if you fill up once a week), then you have bigger problems than gas prices. | You have valid points, but there's a flaw or two (or at the least, a negative cause-and-effect).
Yes, people are forced to live with it, because now they're going broke if they continue their lifestyle. However, there's a problem when people stop buying their luxuries. Companies go out of business, people lose jobs, all as a result because of falling profits. What is one reason for the economic stimulus package? So people can spend because they've been doing more saving than spending, hurting business. People don't save on one little thing, they save by the boatload. If they don't have to go out and eat, they won't, but what says they won't cut more than one corner besides just going out to eat? They probably will cut other habits as well.
It also doesn't help that everything else has gone up in price, discouraging more spending.
If people as a whole were more sensible, then thing might be working out better than they are now.
But anyway, that's one reason why I ended up buying a new Corolla instead of a used WRX STi. I'd much be happier with 37 MPG instead of about 22. Quote: |

| And that's what people don't realize. Some cars are designed for premium and the label is there for a reason. Just because you bought a super expensive nice car doesn't mean you can treat it like shi+. If you can't afford to put in premium, rather than junking up your car, buy one that can take the low-grade. | |

I'm sure if you took some hypermiling techniques (the realistic ones, not the dangerousasfck shit) in that STi you could probably squeeze out 30 easy. ;b
My dad already pays for premium so he said since he's already paying for premium, may as well get a nicer car that gets better mileage. :] He's now lookin' into an S2000.

For many people.

My dad already pays for premium so he said since he's already paying for premium, may as well get a nicer car that gets better mileage. :] He's now lookin' into an S2000. | Lower octane gas means that it requires less compression before it will ignite on it's own, rather than due to the spark from the spark plug. A good way to get higher horsepower is to increase the compression, therefore performance vehicles usually run a higher compression ratio than standard vehicles. The higher compression will cause gas of lower octane to ignite before the spark plug goes off, causing what it known as "pinging", which is -very- bad for your engine. If your car can handle the lowest octane without pinging, you'll be ok running that type of gas.
S2K gets decent gas mileage just as long as you keep the top up all the time and stay out of VTEC. Quote:

If people as a whole were more sensible, then thing might be working out better than they are now. | Yeah, but that would be market forces at work, which would be nice (IMO). The dumbest luxuries would be the first to go, the markets would realign, and eventually we'd be back on our feet. And for those economic stimulus checks? Online polls pointed to that people were going to either save it, or use it to pay down debts rather than jump start the economy.

| Not sure as to what you mean by this.
In the case of your GE, the i-VTEC is already a part of the L-series engine. From what I understand, the i-VTEC system involves variable camshaft phasing on both intake and exhaust sides.
At least that's how I remember it.
