Default Gmail no longer requires invites

I don't know how long it has been this way but I just noticed today that Gmail no longer requires an invite to sign up.
www.gmail.com
I thought the invite system was a little ridiculous anyway =p

*figured this was more of a general topic that computers/technology but it can be moved if mods of this section see fit*

Old news, but I guess it's only relevant to people who don't have an account yet.

I still think most people are weird for not using it unless they have a valid reason.

They wanted invite only to prevent spamming accounts but well spammers always find a way around.

I think it's been so since April. I got mine from a rogue invite.

Even though it's been public for about three years, it's still in beta, guys!

I hate that "perpetually-in-beta" crap.

Were the invites sent from other users, or were they sent from Gmail itself? I use Windows Live Hotmail Beta at the moment anyway.

It's funny, cause in the amount of time it took for Microsoft to release Windows Live Hotmail beta and now, they have released two beta releases and a final release of Windows Media Player 11.

Wow, I don't even remember using all that many of my invites anyways. Most people i would have invited managed to get one before I did.

I agree. That makes no sense, and it's as if sites just tack it on as some sort of buzzword now, instead of an actual stage of development.

Invites haven't been needed for a while now, which kinda makes me wonder - why do we still have invites then? If Gmail was opened to registration, then why wouldn't invites be removed?

Actually, what would make more sense would be to just remove the limit on invites, since it's basically now an automated process that gives the person a link to gmail's signup page with maybe a tiny bit of information pre-entered from the inviter's end.
