hahahaha. AIJ has changed quite a bit since you got banned. Now it's filled with teenagers who are gay for each other and jack off to stupid ITG customs and "chill" threads. Nobody there gives a damn about DDR anymore except a handful of people.
yeah this is kind of a problem

i am curious if you still play at all JSB (i'm also curious if you ever heard anything about DTX/M.O.V.E. falling apart since i never did lol)

Ey sir jsbee (jsb)

If I may ask (and I've heard rumors and hearsay about it in the past few months): Were you the one who taught Jim Carrey how to play the game?

or was it someone else?

two good questions

1. i dont really play at all no. once in a blue moon i'll try to but it wont work out well and i basically wont have any of the setup im used to having. i was very particular about conditions when i played. i wanted to wear specific kinds of clothes, i absolutely NEEDED specific shoes, etc. i had to have multiple shirts because i hate the feeling of a wet shirt. i was a real primadonna so basically only a lunatic would just happen to have this shit with him any random day so whenever i end up seeing a ddr machine i either dont even try playing or i might play one game and feel filthy afterwards. also i feel like a real lame idiot because im not good at all

2. i could write a book on dtx/MOVE (or at least a pretty big post) im not sure if that is the kind of response you would be looking for however

it would be a lie to say i didn't hear anything although the phrasing there is questionable. ultimately the failure of dtx was my fault. i simply didn't see a place we could take the project; the prospects looked bad in all directions. its been quite a while and im not sure what is and isnt kosher to say but what i can tell you is that a major factor in the soft-death of the project was that it was expressed to us that konami wasn't interested in seeing our product HIT THE STREETS. in all honesty this was always a possibility we considered in the back of our minds, but when thrown up against the avalanche of other issues we were having, it was hard to see a really great future for the product. it also did seem that dancing games had hit the apex, so the viability of a franchise was questionable

basically this is all dancing around the point. it was theoretically possible to finish the game on a real shoestring budget (and in fact we were personally financing certain elements of production, with plans to do so until the software was "finished" [pre-hardware]) but it became practically difficult very fast. and it was not going to be possible to get money from outside sources for a variety of reasons, but the biggest two being the konami legal threat and the absolute organizational disaster of the MOVE project (we basically had a bunch of content, made under weird verbal agreements that changed from person to person, made between adults in california, minors in arizona, part time models in japan, with no legal consideration given in half the cases, etc etc). nobody would invest in the project, and nobody in the project had the combination of resources and devotion necessary to make the big leap. I WASNT WILLLING TO PUT MY DDR FORTUNE ON THE LINE although i was prepared to potentially sacrifice my ddr machine in the name of progress

anyway while i think there are a lot of interesting things that happened with that project worth discussing/thinking about just for the sake of thinking, i wouldnt want anybody to think i was trying to suggest it wasn't my fault. perhaps....teenagers shouldn't adopt management of software development projects...

for a year or so after MOVE i would have argued till i died that nobody could have saved the project but ive since revised my opinion and i think that in far more capable hands than ours, it might have survived. the quasi-existence of ITG as a pump it up sidebrand proves that the resources we had could have been applied to something with a possible market (although there haven't been any sequels to that, have there?)

anyway id love to get dtx/move people together to talk about this stuff because honestly that project was one of the most beneficial things ive ever personally been involved with and i owe a lot of people a great deal of gratitude about it

oh and my final answer is that MOVE isnt dead its just hibernating waiting for konamis music game patents to expire.

we're coming in 2023 so get ready

it was somebody else, a pal of mine who is credited in the film so you might as well watch it again. i was involved in the production however my contact with jim carrey wasn't anything out of the ordinary. he was already a more-than-capable ddr'er by the time we met

sorry to disappoint but please feel free to contribute to jsb/jim carrey slash fiction threads at any time in the future

Man I wish I found this thread earlier.

I guess it makes sense that Konami wouldn't want us going anywhere, but I would've liked to have heard something. After I signed that contract, I heard nothing from the higher-ups, like you or Phrekwenci. Then the forums went down and I just gave up. But if you do decide to start up again let me know! I haven't made any stepcharts recently but it shouldn't be too hard to get back into it I think.

Part of the big problem was that in addition to dealing with the legal side of things (which was my primary concern at the time), we were also trying to organize a legitimate management structure for the project. It was very hard to do this while maintaining a sense of continuity with the previous system. I was in a big hurry (because of personal preference) to remove myself from the day-to-day type operations, but getting that to happen was a huge failure (again, on my part).

Like I said (I think; I'm not reading all those words to make sure), there was really no day where we woke up and realized "the project is dead," because of the nature of how legal disputes/discussions tend to be handled. That, combined with my personal focus shifting on school really just made it pretty awful.

I am really sorry to everybody that was disappointed with how the project turned out. At the very least, I wish we could have released SOMETHING, even if it was free, kind of like those weird Stepmania packages. But it is pretty hard to psychologically settle for a distribution scheme like that when everybody had pie-in-the-sky fantasies of fame, riches, and production studios (I remember talking about this to a few people who didn't like the idea, even as a fallback).

Jumbo - Not that this was the concern at the time, but in retrospect we also were at a significant timing disadvantage. The dance game craze has come and gone. DDR got a significant amount of media attention, spread out over several years, and it never went "mainstream" in any real way. If the traffic of ddrfreak over the past half-decade is any indication, this would be the wrong time to focus a lot on producing a DDR clone.

By the way, if we had all been Guitar Freaks players instead of DDR players, we'd each be millionaires by now. I hope you think about that, because I do every day
