Is it just me, or has the forum been more mean-spirited recently?

I've seen regular members and moderators alike acting mean and talking down to others like this is the right thing to do (myself included). Am I just crazy, or has this always been the norm?

Well, yeah. I've never been big into general discussion threads on most any forum (though I have posted in General Discussion here a few times). I usually join for a specific topic or sub-topic.

Incidentally, this is the first time I've read from you myself.

We've always had our share of jerks, but now we're breaking our "douchebag quota". Ironically enough, although this is a site about music games and that inspires elitists, most of the jerk-ass behavior is just generally from people being dicks for no particular reason.

The bigger this forum gets, the meaner the community becomes. There's really no way that will ever change since the site is just too big now. As a result, it's lost many potential new members and many regulars alike.
