I bought a Beagle puppy from a breeder last October oh no I'm a terrible person.....
You know, it's not like every other dog me or my parents bought came from a shelter or rescue group.

Oh yeah because these dogs have extremely bad habits. Young puppies are trained from their birth up. If you purchase from a shelter be careful of what you are committing to.

For cats that just means they look exotic as fuck, they're weird, and adorable. :3

I think that's baloney though.
The problem is people that abandon their pets when they get bored with it after a few months. If that didn't happen then there wouldn't need to be pets in the shelter to be put down.

But yeah, we've bought two dogs from a shelter and a rescue and our recent one from a breeder, and we've been lucky. It's stupid that people are giving that poor woman crap for being a breeder. My friend bought a puppy from a rescue, but the dog is really all sorts of screwed up, even though she took all the measures to properly take care of her.
The people that SHOULD be terrorized are the crappy owners of the dogs that the rescues get their dogs from (when applicable).

People that seriously do their homework and research specific breeds would probably want to go to a breeder because they would know exactly what to expect. They shouldn't be condemned for not wanting to go to a shelter and adopt something with deeply imprinted issues and who knows what else.
On the other hand, it seems like a "better" choice to adopt a pet at a rescue because of the "saving a life" factor. There's probably lots of pets in shelters that are perfectly fine. And I know I would feel ridiculous paying 1000+ from a breeder when I could get the same result for considerably less.

I can't come up with any good reason to go to a breeder for a pet Quote:

Some of them have had hard lives and developed idiosyncrasies or undesirable behaviors that the owner would have to put up with or train out, but that's part of owning a pet and there's no guarantee that a purebred animal wouldn't have similar tendencies. By going through a shelter you're getting the companionship and loyalty that can come from any cat or dog at a fraction of the price, and you're saving them from a bad situation. It's win-win.

I personally own one cat, but I foster a couple every month or so just to get them adjusted to a home environment, and then give them back to their non-kill shelter, all ready for adoption.
I can't own more than the one I have because my cat will hide upstairs the entire time they're here. He's scared of his own damn shadow, not to mention the kittens I bring home from the shelter.
Also, watch the Penn and Teller Bullshit! episode on PETA. It's amazing.

some puppies are culled at birth due to severe physical defects (such as blindness, missing a leg, etc) but shit happens
