Marketplace Rating: 0 | My letter to Jack Thompson I'm trying to figure out a way to somehow send it to him, any ideas? I think I have an archaic email somewhere, but I think he might of changed it. Here is the letter:
Dear Mister John Bruce Thompson,
My “colorful” internet nickname is TasteTheRainbow, or TTR, with the pun intended. It is has come to my mind to create a letter on what I believe in this new controversy with video games being too violent. I hope you will understand my point of view, and look over my letter with careful consideration. I feel that should read this, even though you probably will disregard it. I want you to understand that I do know your points and I can accept them, only if you can understand mine and accept them also.
As most of my friends know, I am an intelligent, outspoken, and annoying fourteen year old. That’s right, I’m a teenybopper. I am also a very hardcore video gamer, with most of my favorites being Konami’s various Bemani series of music and rhythm games, Silent Hill, Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid, Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, House of the Dead, Megaman, SimCity , The Sims (Both one and two), Grand Theft Auto (to some extent), 塊魂, The Zelda series, Animal Crossing, 逆転裁判 (a.k.a. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney to American gamers), and so many others. I admit that violence is one of my person guilty pleasures every now and then. Although, I know that my family trusts me with my video game decisions.
They know that I am mature enough to recognize the brutal violence in these games and know not to inflict violence on others. Although they are there when I buy video games (since I AM under 18 and can’t buy them on my own), they trust me to have the common knowledge that it is wrong and hurtful to do the things depicted in these games (i.e. Blowing up cars, impaling others with kunai knives, shooting zombies, killing Russians, and rolling the environment and other people into huge balls that can exceed over 100 meters in height, etc.). Honestly, I did this before the Family Entertainment Protection Act. But, unfortunately, most other parents have false trust in their children. They blindly let their children play games they aren’t supposed to get their hands on. In my honest opinion, if video game companies are committing a crime in making these games, the parents that allow their children to play them should go to jail for 5 times as much time. It is up to parents to assume responsibility to what their children are introduced to.
I think that videogame designers have every right to make these games. Although, when they do have such violence and other various factors in mind, they will direct it to a more mature audience (Which the ESRB has stated to be the ages 17 and older) and not to small children. I will take the Sex Mod in Grand Theft Auto: San ******s for example. I loosely believe that they had every right to add it, but it was originally not meant by gamers to slip out into the public. They only reason anyone knew about it was of technically illegal modification of the game. Since they game didn’t have any kind of coding which called for the data to be shown on screen, they are technically not at fault. I admit it’s sneaky and underhanded, but without that modification, it never came up in the original game, therefore it wouldn’t have hit the masses of people who know nothing of game modification in general (which probably is a huge number). I mean, everyone who knew about it needed a patch and couldn’t do it themselves.
Also, I have noticed (through Wikipe-tan, my secret mistress), that when you tried to file an amices curiae you stated “the attorneys had better tell the jury about the violent video game that trained this kid [and] showed him how to kill our daughter, JoLynn. If they don’t, I will.” (Citation given: Hudak, Stephen. “State gets; OK to try teenager as adult 16-year-old accused of killing Medina girl.” Cleveland Plain Dealer, May 13, 2003.) I honestly don’t think that this is even remotely possible. The shock from a gun (from what I can recollect, I don’t have any guns, but the basic laws of physics and the force given by shooting a piece of metal at speeds of over 60 miles an hour should suffice) isn’t properly simulated by rumbling of the Dual Shock Controller released by Sony. Proper aim isn’t given either, given that he human body isn’t controlled by a directional pad. Survival techniques are also improperly simulated, given that humans don’t have a 100 life count and that it doesn’t take more than 2 shots of police officer’s handgun to take anyone down. It’s just downright wrong to say that you can train from these games. Also, no game I have played properly tells you how to eject a magazine clip, successfully reload, pull a trigger, or any other basic information needed to properly use a gun. In your 1997 case James v. Meow Media, the boy even admitted he HAD trained with a REAL gun, and stole several guns from his friend’s family and his own family (Citation given: Moore, Mark H., Petrie, Carol V., Braga, Anthony A., and McLaughlin, Brenda L. (Eds). (2003) "Deadly Lessons: Understanding Lethal School Violence." )
I hope the you will read this letter with as much attention that I placed into writing it, and I hope you will consider what I have to say from an intellectual viewpoint. Have a very Brady day. Sincerely,
TTR What do you guys think?

Someone from FB sent one to him before in 6.0, I forgot who (raven?).

The guy is like a real-life "troll". There's no debating or discussion with him, so don't worry about it. It's his bit.

Marketplace Rating: 4 | See, I know this is just going to feel like shitting on anyone under 17. But I like that act.
I like the fact that 14 year olds cant go in and buy Doom 3. Shit I had to show Identification to buy Doom 3. Its a really good idea. The Thing here is TTR, You may be responsible, and like most of us, know where the game is, but Joe Average 14 year old doesnt. Im sure that there are kids out there that think that when you die, you just have to push space to respawn.
And thats not right.
Honestly, While I dont think video games cause violence personally, as I have seen many examples personally that I dont want to talk about here. I still think its a good idea for 14 yearolds to not be playing GTA and Doom 3, similar to how they arent allowed to watch porn.

But uh... yeah, judging by what diekatze88 said, you aren't making a valid point. I don't see any reason why people under the age of 17 should be allowed to play M-rated games. Speaking from a parental perspective, they just don't need to see that sort of stuff. Speaking from a business perspective, I don't want parents bitching at me for their own carelessess (see:Wordpress signature).

Marketplace Rating: 1 | I read this and couldn't help but feel that my time was being wasted. I didn't find anything particularly convincing in it, and the overall tone did seem like that of a outspoken and annoying 14-year old who just wants to be able to play his violent games. Unfortunately, this is not a group that receives much credibility.
I know you want to make it personal to try and appeal to him with a best-case scenario (i.e. yours), but my English professors have always taught me that the most convincing essays have almost no first-person sentences in them at all, unless absolutely necessary. This letter should not be about you and how video games affect your life, because Thompson isn't going to care. He's going after the majority, and you need to address what you think is the majority of cases. Leave yours out; it really detracts from the quality of the letter.
Also, as someone else said earlier in the other thread, Thompson isn't going to understand most of your Internet in-jokes, so if I were you I would just leave them out. If you want this letter to have any effect at all, try to write it in a serious, less personable tone. Give evidence instead of testimony. Basically, sound like a lawyer! Otherwise, you'll just be writing a fan letter.
