No, it was because Sarah Palin is terrifying on so many levels and most people seriously had to question the judgment someone who would keep her on the ballot as VP. A fair number of fiscal conservatives specifically mentioned this as a reason for not voting McCain.

Plus, competent or not, Obama's a pretty charismatic guy.

This is pretty much impossible to do short of removing it from the solar system entirely.

As a fiscal conservative I sadly think that Palin will destroy the conservative section of the GOP. I would much rather have Huckabee or Thompson in the running.

Also, while charisma can get one elected, it won't put money in the bank.

To be honest, I don't think Obama's economic policies have been all that bad, and I'm not convinced that McCain could have done any better. Doubly so if he toppled over and left Palin in charge.
