PS2 Laser replacement

I have a japanese ps2 model SCPH-90000 (cinnabar red color) that won't read discs. The laser lights up and moves, but will NOT read any game (I only have IIDX games though if that makes a difference) I put in it.

Now I know how to replace the laser on a slim ps2, but i can only seem to find one type of slim ps2 laser. I assume it's the same one in the US ps2, so I'm wondering if the same laser will work in a JP ps2. Does anyone know for sure if it will or will not work?

If it WON'T work, can someone point me in the right direction for a ps2 slim laser replacement specifically for the JP ps2?

tbh i think you would be better off buying a new ps2

well at least for the fat ps2s the lens went for about $80 bucks and i would assume a japanese lens would cost way more

If this is a fat you should do the awesome thing and just get HD Loader.

As far as I can tell, its the same laser between US PS2 and JP PS2, so go ahead and try to replace the laser "properly" with a US laser if you can

But before you try that, try the nail polish remover cleaning trick. Worked for my US PS2, reads discs like a champ now.

i have a fat ps2 lying around with a disc read error for dvds only as i can still play PS1 games, so you dab nail polish remover on the the lens and it helps it read ps2 dvds again?

be very careful while doing this, but its a successful operation for many people. I personally use rubbing alcohol, but Ive never come across a lens that was dirty enough to merit nail polish remover.

Word of warning:

do not get anything but the pure acetone stuff if you go the nail polish remover route. anything with scents, or color, or other such bullshit will *DAMAGE* your ability to read lasers. (EDIT: Ive been poking around the internet and people go either way on this one. Just use rubbing alcohol, it'll work.)

do not get the agent on anything BUT the laser lens. Remember that these are harsh chemical agents and they like to eat all of the things that computer electronics are made of.

If you're going safety, use rubbing alcohol 3 or 4 times with about an hour spacing. although honestly, My PS2 was bought used from someone who abused a large amount of weed, cigarettes and incense and I only had to clean the laser once with rubbing alcohol, YMMV.

Procedure:
Get Q-tip.
Get Cleaning agent (for your first few time use rubbing alcohol.)
Take apart your PS2.
Dab a very small amount of cleaning agent on the PS2 laser lens.
Wait 5 minutes.
Take the dry end of the qtip and wipe it off.
Wait 20 minutes.
Test PS2 with a DVD (No need to reassemble PS2, take the white thing out of the black cover of the DVD drive, place the disc on the PS2 DVD drive as if it were a gamecube and put the white thing in the center, the magnet will hold it there)
If it works faster, Hooray!
If not, go back to the start and skip taking it apart because you were smart enough to not reassemble the damn thing until it worked.

ahh ok thanks, well its disassembled already =P

it had been working and then i didn't use it for a week and the lens died, so i will try this later and hopefully it works

the laser is the same. the parts are the same. the region bios is the only thing different. As long as you remove the security solder, you're good. Most of the new lasers don't even require calibration which is awesome

edit: get the laser from videogame advantage. They have the best lasers i've ever used, and if you can, deal with Ron.

Cant you just dab the alchohol on the lazer with the flip top open on the slim?

There is also a USB utility that supposedly works on either..but i haven't used it

I assume that loading times might be a pain...and it can cause songs to come out of sync

I guess I'll try the rubbing alcohol trick. I have nothing to lose, and if it doesn't work, I'll just try and replace the laser. I'll let everyone know how it went when i do it.
