Default Remember this?

For those that have been around GD long enough, you probably remember the thread about the mentally disabled girl whose parents opted to have her sex organs removed so she wouldn't hit puberty and therefore would be easier to take care of. Well, in an interesting twist of fate, there's now this:

Report: 'Pillow angel' surgery broke law - CNN.com

A hospital that performed a controversial procedure that stunted the growth and sexual development of a profoundly disabled child violated Washington state law by sterilizing her, according to an investigative report released Tuesday.

I really hope they throw the book at her parents.

I though you were in support of her parents.

No, I've always thought the contrary. The only way in which I supported her parents was in the fact that I can empathize in how hard it is to take care of a special needs child, as I'm a caregiver for my baby brother. He's severely autistic and has cerebral palsy, among other things.

For a moment I thought she was so severely autistic that anything her brain absorbs, it would reject it, but now it was only a horribly severe mental condition.

Kinda scary how anyone could be traumatized by the mere sight of blood that having anything to do with womanly developement could scar her for life. She could cut her finger tommarrow and then what happens? Her parents order her to be padded from head to foot? Tsk. But still, they're only trying to protect her on account that she can never learn anything new.

In my mind, there's better ways to go treat/care for people like her. We have so many more treatment and care options available to children and people like her now that such procedures like the one performed on her are really morally unacceptable.

I positively agree. At this point in the developement of medical and psychological treatment I hardly think it's necessary to go to such "pains". Such actions really seem more devoted to self-interest than anything else - what right does anyone have to deprive a person of their physical identity?
