Wyoming and Idaho are prepared to kill as many wolves as possible within their state boundaries, which will undoubtedly bring them back on the endangered species list, which they have not been on since 1995. I urge you to sign this and tell everyone you know to do the same.

Wolf hunting began as a solution to the decreasing amount of elk, deer, and other animals that people hunt and use for food. It primarily began in Alaska, and has slowly branched out from there to Wyoming and Idaho. (Patton) Currently in Alaska, there are only about 7,000 to 11,000 wolves. With so many wolves living in Alaska, the other populations of animals were dying off quickly. As a result of this, hunters living in the area were beginning to complain about this lack of “game” to hunt. Idaho and Wyoming, around the Northern Rockies region, are the home of many wolves. There wolves haven’t been harmed yet because they are under the protection of the Endangered Species Act. However, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is going to take the wolves off of the endangered species list. This could act will most likely lead to the death of many wolves living in that area. Idaho and Wyoming are planning to eliminate up to 75% of the wolf population currently living in the Clearwater National Forest district. Idaho currently contains 65 wolf packs. The people of Idaho are also planning to eliminate 54 of the 65 wolf packs currently living there.

If I had to guess I'd say it's tied to traditional attitudes regarding top-level predators: they're threats to domesticated animal and hunted game alike, and so some groups wish to reduce their numbers. It's sad, but this is probably going to go through.

i'm speaking as a devout student of conservation policy here when i say that the loss of wolves isn't even remotely comparable to the WWII-era holocaust (which i assume you're referring to)

MDRL, I didn't elaborate in what I meant. the point I was trying to get across was that genocide is genocide, whether it be against humans or animals. either way it's wrong. Yes, WW2 was much worse in terms of loss and effects, but this is genocide as well and it's nothing to be taken lightly.

That being said, I apologize for not elaborating, but don't paint me as a tree hugger or an extremist. I just happen to think killing animals with no justifyable reason is fucked up.

Since I first saw the ticker a day or so ago, it read at about 121,000. Even though 9000 signatures in a day is pretty good, I doubt it will make the 200,000 mark by wednesday.
