Default U.S. gov't can go fuck itself

New bill would punish colleges, students who don't become copyright cops

Bill tying financial aid to antipiracy efforts passes House committee

TL;DR: Read the goddamn titles of those links.

So these are just related to financial aid? If we don't have any financial aid, does this make a difference?

Within the University of California, the school has always punished pirating via school networks with 2 warnings until dismissal, its been like that for at least 5 years now quite frankly what the government passed is something way overdue. I think it takes the government that long to make a law or something.

Florida Atlantic University has also had a similar policy for several years now. Good thing I live off campus.

I wouldn't exactly be mad at the government. Be mad at the record/movie companies who are forcing the government to put their time and money into something as stupid as sharing media.

I didn't realize the MPAA and RIAA voted on House and Senate matters. I was under the impression our Congressmen did that.

You'd better believe that they influence it.

To be honest, one of the reasons I've been holding out on looking for scholarships is because I'm looking for the best college in Virginia in terms of internet privileges and it seems I'm going to have to look harder now.

[Edit]By the way if this kind of thing gets you riled up may I suggest reading Free Culture by Lawrence Lessig. It will make you understand why you hate this kind of thing in the first place.

Yeah, but I would say that that is much more Congress's fault for going along with it rather than the MPAA's/RIAA's fault for pushing it. Their hands aren't tied or anything.

If a producer has to depend on piracy for distribution and publicity, he could as well just use the Creative Commons and get word of it out legitimately.

You would be absurdly naive to think that they don't have an influence on the government.

In this country, money talks.

Or do you think the government is willingly putting their time and effort into protecting 50 Cent's music?

I don't see how this really influences a student's opportunity to get financial aid. Those link names seem misleading. The school itself will get less federal aid, but it isn't really doing anything to a student's ability to get aid to attend school.

They're just forcing universities to do something about students' illegal activities. Maybe it's because I'm not living on a campus, but it seems like a non-issue to me.
