Fuck if I'm paying for something I don't ever use.

The RIAA and MPAA aren't going to win this in the end. What we are looking at with the Internet is total reform of how entertainment is managed. The law has such little power over the Internet that what's really going to happen is that laws are going to change. Companies don't want to admit this and it's going to be a struggle till the end before it happens.

every single thing in both of those links is reasonable except the notion of forcing schools to provide a legal alternative for music acquisition and if you say otherwise you're a pissy little bitch upset over your impending inability to steal daft punk albums at will

You have a good point, but we can't allow ourselves to be forced into choosing iTunes. iTunes started selling DRM free music because we forced them to. Allowing them to force us is only going to give them the impression that they can get away with a lot more.

so buy it on a cd or buy it through play.fm or a comparable service or pirate it from home on break or do without it until a satisfactory option becomes available, all of which are options available to any student who wishes to acquire music without running the risk of attracting attention

if a school demands that a student pay for music that they don't want, they have the choice not to go to school there, or to study harder and get a scholarship to defray the additional expense

golly this whole situation has all kinds of ways to avoid any hassle at all doesn't it

It's called lobbying, blame the RIAA; or blame yourself for not becoming more personally involved in changing antiquated property laws.

I know Rhapsody and Napster are definitely DRM files. What services have DRM free music?

Switching schools and studying really really hard to cover the extra expense are not "avoiding any hassle at all."

well if you're not willing to commit to courses of action that would mitigate the problem then i guess it's not enough of an issue to get worked up about then is it

This is the biggest bunch of bullshit ever, because its going to destroy college like mine first, ones that don't really have the capacity to filter their internet connections, because they're running their network like its 1980, and don't have the available capacity to filter their internet connections.

I depend on state and federal funding! If I don't have it theres no way I can actually attend college, The banks aren't going to loan me what my tuition actually is for 2 and a half more years.

In addition, I don't live on campus, would I still get "free" legal download services? Does this go out of its way to screw the 50% of students that are commuter students or does it properly screw us fair and equally?

My school got Ruckus last year, which I completely ignored until reading this thread the other day. I tried to check it out, but apparently you can only play their files with the Ruckus Music Player, which to me makes it feel like it's no better than listening to streaming music. What's the point if I can't put it on my mp3 player and listen to it while I'm getting screwed waiting 40 minutes for the campus bus?
