A lot of high school students, and even some college students, suck at reading and writing English, despite growing up in the state and using---you guessed it---English as their sole language. I should add that some of them are so pathetic that they can barely form a correct sentence in speech too.

Nevada's public education system is ranked one of the lowest in the United States, meaning that it's near impossible to compete with other applicants to a prestigious university (my friend scored a perfect score on both the SAT and the ACT, had a perfect GPA, did tons of community service, and played two instruments, and she didn't get accepted to Harvard).
