Marketplace Rating: 0 | Backwardsyness: Do I want to play Mario 64? (VC) So, I just got my Wii and the Virtual Console is one of the endeavors I'm willing to take upon. I've played less then 5% of what's on there even though I'm technically old enough to have remembered just hearing their names. Kirby's fine and all and it was neat playing that.
Now, here's my dilemma. Super Mario Sunshine. I played that about two years ago that I borrowed from a kid. What instantly turned me off about the game is that there were large levels but the game is centered around recycling them eight times over. I tried to keep progressing in the game and I did okay enough but one afternoon, I entered one of those bonus areas to get a Shine or something and it was modeled after a pachinko machine. I won't forget that day because of some minor glitch that did not allow me to move in the direction I wanted to even if I jumped after it. I was yelling the fuck out of my lungs and I almost broke the controller from throwing it at the wall 4 times over.
So today I buy a Classic Controller and I'm pondering over either Mario 64 or Mario Kart 64. I've never played these games. Ever. I never had a 64. Probably wouldn't have either because of that atrocious controller. I know there's a Mario 64 DS but I hear it's not much of an improvement so it was a good idea to wait it out to buy this older but cheaper iteration. Seeing as I wasn't fond of Super Mario Sunshine, should I blow 10 bucks on Mario 64 or Mario Kart 64?

Also, Super Mario 64 would be a bit better than Mario Kart 64. MK 64 doesn't hold up to Double Dash nowadays.

Marketplace Rating: 2 | Super Mario 64 does involve a fair amount of the recycling you're discussing, but there are more individual levels than there are in Sunshine, and there are a number of levels that change substantially from goal to goal. I'd also say that the level design is on the whole better than Sunshine's in terms of variety, challenge, and the like.
There's a reason it's still used as a benchmark for 3D platformers, and it's because it's one of the very best. If you haven't tried it I really recommend that you drop the $10 on it.
also give me your friend code you piece of shit

Marketplace Rating: 11 | your missing out on a serious landmark in gaming if you havent played SM64. it seems pretty unanimous that it is one of the easier purchase decisions on the VC. and just to defend the game, the recycling of level is okay since more and more sections of the level or features become accessible when you need to get certain stars. (like the cannon in jolly roger bay, that alone made the level x3 more fun to play for me.)
but i end up playing Gunstar Heroes the most on VC, you and a buddy in that game = hours of fun. (my friend gets mad when i toss him into bottomless pits and mid-bosses)

Marketplace Rating: 0 | Funny how a friend of mine burned a friend of his for getting Mario 64 instead of Gunstar Heroes. I guess he played that out already.
I remember a long time ago a Got Milk? commercial used gameplay (fake gameplay, but authentic graphics nonetheless) from Mario 64.

Of course the goals like MDRL said you'll need to keep going back into every world to get stars..

More importantly, why didn't anyone tell me Kirby's Adventure on the NES had an epic ending? That game got hard!
