Definately get Super Mario 64 for good, wholesome one-player action, and then wait til you get Mario Kart 64 when you get a second controller (or if you have a GameCube contoller already for two-players).

I think as you said for Mario 64 for the DS not being much of an improvement, the only beef I have with that is just using the D-pad on the DS to grab and swing Bowser into one of those spiked bombs, not like the greased lightning moves they have with the joystick. They had a bunch of add-ons (like grabbing white, yellow, pink, and green rabbits, unlocking chracters, minigames, and special stars only obtained by a particular character, etc.) to further enhance the gameplay. It's not a real bad game, but just the D-pad can get pretty tricky when you don't know how to do tight turns.

But if I were you, I'd just get Super Mario 64 and then mosey up to Mario Kart 64 later on. If you haven't played either of these games, go for it please. You won't be sorry.

So, I suck at Mario 64 but it's not my fault for its EPIC-BACK-IN-THE-DAY controls.

Well, it could be worse, using the Classic Controller on StarFox 64 warrants horrible playing. Which just sucks.

at least they give you the option of using the GC controller. it feels more suitable for the N64 games than the classic controller. it just doesnt feel right using that thing, it doesnt have enough grip to warrant using the analog sticks.

the wavebird wins.

I'm fine with SM64 with the Classic Controller, but it is true about Starfox 64-- the Wavebird is MUCH better. If anything, just because the boost and brake are set to X and Y-- Very handy.

More like, you just suck with it and won't play for the five minutes it takes to get used to it. I've got Gold Medals on everything now and I've never touched anything but the Classic Controller for it.

The classic con is horrible garbage for anything newer than SNES/Genesis games--i.e., N64 titles--and although it's fantastic for those older titles it's idiotic to "get used to it" when there's a perfectly acceptable, more comfortable alternative right there

I use my PS2 arcade controller for just about everything, even things like RPGs. I find that in order to use the regular controllers they were designed for, I have to "get used to" them all over again. I'd rather not.

This post reminds me of how DKW would use an arcade joystick to play IIDX for the longest time.
