A lot of it seems that you MUST have a flash card and other devices to be able to do anything fun with it.

Is there anything you can with a standard nintendo ds ASIDE from playin games?

Spam some pictochat rooms.

...Or you can buy a flashcart and do those homebrew things. Or buy a play-yan and watch movies on it with an SD card, but that's what Meizu M6's and portable video players are for anyways.

You'll need a flash cart to use any homebrew.

Well, you will be able to surf the net soon, if the adapter hits shores outside of Japan. Other than that, uh, it's a GAMING system. Why the hell would it do anything else? That's why it's $100 cheaper than a PSP.

That browser better have some useful extras. Otherwise it's quite overpriced at $30.

Maybe because people develop homebrew software for it? Half of the fun is making a system do something it's not supposed to.

You can use two Nintendo DSes as nunchucks. This is no lie. There is a DS ninja guild at my school.

I know, it's not enough to have an offical tetris, I'm not REALLY having fun until I'm playing some guy's homebrew version of it that I had to do some soldering/and buy some extra equipment to get it to play.

Emulators? Cool, they give me a bigger library to play with. Most homebrew on consoles? Not exactly pushing the boundries of gamemaking. The thrill of playing a crappy version of tetris when I'm not intended to is pretty goddamn tepid, in my opinion...

But to each his own

You can use the DS as an alarm clock, flashlight, small shield against rocks, and calendar.

As of late I'm been using mine as an alarm clock much more than I've been using it as a game system.

many excellent games?

I mean that's like demanding that the PS2 double as a skateboard or something.
