Marketplace Rating: 0 | Championship Gaming Invitational (DirectTV) I was looking for something at 12:15am on TV to get me to sleep and out of randomness, I found this video game competition show.
It had a very simple structure for what I saw. Two games were being alternated: Counter-Strike and Project Gotham Racing 3.
PGR3 was a simple 3-lap race with 3 players and the finalist won $10,000 (2nd place gets $5,000). Covering the race was a little amusing: Only the more interesting players were being covered, even if they're battling it out for 2nd place just because they were shoving each other. Camera angles ranged from the angles available to players and the ones used presumably for spectator views. Also unusual was the announcer watching the race; he was the stereotypical guy with the monotonous voice you'd hear at horsetrack races.
Counter-Strike had 20 90-second rounds with terrorists vs. spies consisting of 5-players each. After the first 10 rounds, the teams switched roles. Frankly, that structure seemed very unusual. It would be better if the teams switched roles every round just to keep them on edge. :3 There was a decent overhead view and a spectator camera guided manually as if they had no clipping. Out on the show's stage, each guy had a coach of sorts, if you can believe that.
So anyway, there appears to be a short show-long tournament for some games (i.e. PGR3 and maybe even Dead or Alive 4 in a future show) and tournaments that span over a few episodes (Counter-Strike, Battlefield 2). I'm not sure if anyone's going to get into this thing but I could probably sit through it.
Since it's on DirectTV, not everyone will watch it either. And it'll be finalized as a series in 2007 as well.

Marketplace Rating: 4 | woah, i never heard of that show... but it reminds me of that other show that G4 was airing a while ago called Arena, only i dont know if you're implying that the people in the show you're talking about are actually professionals or not, becuase in that Arena show, im pretty sure as long as you had a team you can enter.
it had sorta the same setup i think, minus the coaches thing.

A group of retarded looking monsters will appear and you will take turns hitting each other. When it is all over you will get 648 Gil and a fire ring. Why the 12 foot tall monster with no hands had a fire ring that fits everyone from you to your grandma will still be mystery to man.

They switch after 10 rounds to make everything balanced, since sometimes you can't win on a certain side; this is what's wrong with counter strike in the first place. Once you get yourself a stacked team, it's over.
It's a shame people take this game so seriously. And when they aren't taking it seriously, they're playing iceworld or fucking surfing maps. It doesn't make any sense to me.

While DOA 4 is still probably still popular at a scrub level the tournament level of the game died several months after the game came out, much like Soul Calibur 3.

Marketplace Rating: 0 | It's a show hosted by DirecTV on DirecTV which is a giant plug for the 360, plus some competition.
That's all I'm saying on this. Sorry, but if I have to choose Championship Gaming Invitational and anything on Food Network with Alton Brown, I'm choosing Alton Brown.

kasumi
hayabusa
jann lee (although i use him myself non-scrubbily i know how bad he can be)
