Total Tokens: 9,325.01 Donate Tokens | Day of The Hybrids I recall a time when "Hybrid Games" were few and far between.
What I mean by Hybrid Games are games like the "Grand Theft Autos" and "FPS-Turned-3rd-Person" [or vice versa] games that were popular during the day of the original "Windows 95" systems, and "Playstation" days. Video games that have more than "One Genre" in game (you get out the car and walk the streets in 1st person view, then get in a jet later and the game becomes a "Jet Simulator" and then you leave the jet and play a "Mini-Game" in an RTS style video game).
My favorite game before these "Hybrid Games" became of pop status was the sometimes-forgotten:
Guardian Legend
For the Nintendo Entertainment System (Yeah... the 8-Bit One).
In this "SHRUMP/RPG" mix, I will never forget the days I battled great balls of Seaweed over space skies and cringed as their haneous eyeballs starred into me... burning into the shield of my "Glider Ship."
Then I'd trek the grounds and politic with "The-Round-Creature" until he unlocked the "Secret Gate" that could be opened no other way.
Another favorite of mine was... ARGH! I forget the name.
Perhaps if I find the time, I will look into it...
Shinobi! Sidescroller into "FPS" (back before doom. ^^)
I must say that my favorite "Modern Hybrid Game" is "Megaman 8."
In it, the usual course of a typical "Blue-Bomber [Megaman] Side Scroller" suddenly became a... "SHRUMP" [thanks for the term MrHioSan! ^^]. I'd ride the back of Rush and pick up power ups as I road Rush in his "Rush Jet Form."
Ah. Those are the games. A little something more than a "Static" form of play [i.e. RPG, RTS, Side Scroller, or Fighter All The Way Through].
Now, Bemanistyle Community--Before Playstation and PC became large "Gamestations" for "Hybrid Games" which was your favorite?
Which is your favorite "Modern?"
I certainly look forward to your opinions. Thanks for listening to mine.
Sincerely,
-Tiger M. Gales

Edit: And it also took less time to scroll through.

Most of the game would be the primary genre, (MEGAMAN 8 IS A FUCKING PLATFORMER) and there would be like 1 or 2 instances of the secondary genre (MEGAMAN 8 IS STILL A PLATFORMER).
Just because a game has certain elements of different genre's in it doesn't meant that it's a hybrid game. Just because you have a hoverboard and can do tricks as well as shoot lots of shit in Jak 2 doesn't meant that it's a Skateboard or 3PS game. It's a platformer, and will first and foremost be a platformer.

I always found the idea (as you call it) of a hybrid to be very interesting, but very rarely done well, because the developer usualy over develops in one area, and under develops in another area.

The thing is, it's not really a hybrid if you have one stage of something in a game full of another genre. A hybrid is multiple genres within one game sharing the stage. The Sims is a hybrid (city-builder + virtual pet), Megaman 8 is not.
Other examples of success in this field:
* Mario Paint (MS Paint training + Fruity Loops training)
* Psychonauts (Inane item collecting platformer + Fun platformer)
* The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (Platformer + Hack & slash + Fishing simulation)
* Steel Battalion (Mech combat + Flight simulator)
* MS Flight Simulator (Flight simulator + Holy warrior training tool)
And things that might resemble, but are not hybrids:
* Metal Gear Solid series (resembles a 3rd-person platfomer + weapons, is actually Splinter Cell minus the huge amount of gadgets)
* Halo (resembles an FPS + GTA-alike due to vehicles, is actually a Marathon clone without as much storyline and/or fun)
* Armored Core series (resembles mech combat + Gran Turismo-ish customization, is actually just a Mario Kart knockoff due to being Gran Turismo with weapons)
So, have I cleared up any confusion?

Himawari & Fletcher, thank you for staying on topic.
m335h73r of /flex, I know that there is no such thing as a "Hybrid" as a genre, and I know that games are labeled as one thing and that's what the game is. Nevertheless, the reason for this thread is to think beyond the name given to games like Guardian Legend and Megaman 8 (which I know is a "Platformer" while some prefer to call it a "Side-Scroller"). This is really not what I expected from the Bemanistyle Community on this topic.
GuyWithHat, I only suck balls because it is what you perceive that is what I do. Since I know that this is not the case (except for a spheres of chocolate candy with cherries in the middle & carmel cream ever so often--so bad for my health); I will dismiss this statement as sheer ignorance (of course, then again, that is only in my own perception).
m335h73r of /flex, since you are a moderator who has posted on this thread, could you please do me a favor and lock this Thread and toss it to the "Graveyard?" There is no need for anyone to continue writing in this "off-topic-stream-of-ignorance." I certainly am not going to.
Regardless of if this topic is locked or not; I am not reading anymore posts on this thread as it is not worth the waste of me spending my most valuable resource: My Time [and I suggest to Himiwari and Fletcher not to spend anymore of their "Most Valuable Resource" on this off-topic thread either].
Thanks a lot flammers for making a great fool of yourselves. Your negativity does not affect me--it simply rips from your own souls.
Sincerely,
-Tiger M. Gales
P.S. Have an issue with how I present my thoughts? Simply don't read them. You are not going to hurt me by spewing your negative words [because I skip over most of your negative comments], so you can save it--or continue to say whatever it is that you feel. Your choice.
-Tiger
P.S.S. Moderator, again, please lock this forumand "Burry" it in the "Graveyard." It's become way off topic and will only go downhill from here. It's a "Three-legged Horse..." please take it out to pasture and shoot it. BONZAI! *BANG!*

wait a second. I said OG mod. That means that person can post in locked threads SILLY ME.
Still leaving it open, because I'm fairly sure if you think beyond the morons who were being cocks about sentence structure, (I am deleting those posts) you may find yourself at an impasse of sorts. Do you want the thread to stay open? Or do you want the bemanistyle community to stay ignorant about video games, and to never again think beyond what a game is categorized by?

The game was called Urban Assualt and was an RTS/Action hybrid game which i thought was pretty cool. You play as a character who is permanently part of a supercomputer/floating battlestation with guns, which uses energy to make stuff like helicopters or tanks out of thin air. You order your guys around on a map and you can see what they are doing in real time, and what was unique about the game at the time was that you could hop into any unit and drive it around and shoot stuff.
You didn't have to play every level, and you usually had 2 to 4 choices of levels, all of which have different stuff and unlockable technologies to use. And each side you fought was pretty different to each other, ranging from the side you play with (sort of like modern European/American military), to things like WW1 Germany and Futuristic Russia, plus aliens which invade and screw up stuff on earth by tapping heat from the earth's core.
Overall, pretty good game for its time, nice concept compared to most RTSs now.
