I know how that happened about the translation issues, during the PS1-era, Sony has acquired Square by the time the Nintendo 64 was announced. Sony of America may be the reason they weren't great translators for Japanese-developed games such as Wild ARMs (though that translation in my opinion was better efforts for Sony) and Star Ocean: The Second Story when they translated the Enix game. By the time the PS2/GameCube/Xbox era arrived, Square was a free company and was able to develop games on Nintendo's systems (though almost nonexistent for Microsoft's console - the only Square Enix game was Final Fantasy XI for Xbox 360). Since FFVIII on PS1 in 1999, Square's translation was significantly improved. If FFVII becomes a download for PlayStation Network (likely), will the translation change, or will that remain intact?

It's been said a dozen times, why would Square release a game as a $6 download when they could put out a remake with a filter on the graphics to make it look polished and one or two minor additions and sell it for $40 easily?

You mean make the remake look like Crisis Core or Advent Children, right? Crisis Core did push the PSP as far as it can go.
The only reason I played VII was because of the cameo appearances of Cloud and Tifa and Yuffie and whoever else in Ehrgeiz and the place I got it from was selling a pretty nice bundle with Parasite Eve. VII was an alright FF, but I still prefer VIII and IX, IX in particular because of the story.
I did like the materia system of VII though, I had fun swapping out different materia between characters.
The characters in Ehrgeiz were Cloud, Tifa, Sephiroth, Yuffie, and Vincent. I remember only playing that game because of the FF characters and I ended up using Yoko more then anyone else.

What sucks is, it's selling for $40 as it is right now.
I mean i've beaten the game twice.....but I will problably never go through it again. Cause I pretty much know what is going to happen...and that totally takes the fun out of the game.
