Apperently, Sega plans to stop producing their format of the GD-ROM Disc. While it would effectively end production of any future dreamcast games (Karous, Trigger Heart Exelica), it would also kill off any new titles for NAOMI hardware.
Well anyway, take a look at the article. I would elaborate more, but the people who care will know what this means and the people who don't probably don't care anyway.

I am assuming some developers are going to vocalize their suport for the system.
Does anyone know if the guys who did Last Hope got offically licensed? I know play-asia completely sold out of their Limited Editions.

Additionally, I do believe Atomiswave still runs off Naomi-based board with no optical drive. If that's true, then NAOMI isn't completely dead. As was mentioned earlier, it's attractive to few developers (mainly SNK-Sammy-Sega) because it's so cheap, which also means easier to turn a profit on it, plus arcades like the cheaper price point compared to, say, Lindberg and System 248.

The GD-Rom drive is optional on Naomi I and II, but it just about cuts in half what games you can play. Many games use the GD-ROM. They load the entire game at the power on, and the additional memory chaches the game to decreases load times.
It might not completely kill NAOMI, but it would decrease the quality of the games if they were forced onto ROM boards.
Where have you been? The Atomiswave may have been based on NAOMI, but it has long since been abandoned due to the limited nature of the hardware.

I still like my dreamcast and even though its life was short i'll still like playing it.
