when I say they all feel the same, I mean they all operate using the exact same system, everyone has the exact same progression. Even multiclassing is extremely rigid.
In my 3.5 campaigns all the players got together and discussed what sort of characters they were making, what type of character we'd probably need (healer/skillmonkey/blahblah), so we each had our role structure too. But each class usually had some amount of unique design behind it, while every class in 4.0 feels so vanilla and plays identically.
I like a lot of what they did with 4.0, but I think I'll wait until some supplement books come out before I try to switch off of 3.5.
edit: oh yeah, and screw the 4.0 alignments ~_~
