Heh these games are a classic indeed (like Raiden III which is similar to it).

Btw, did it say how much it cost though?

On Konami's product site, 1,000 Wii Points ($10), which I expected since most WiiWare games go for around that much.

Bumped because the game was released today in US (that was unexpected). Going to download it as soon as I take care of some things (i.e within the next 5 minutes setting my Wii up so it can download via wired connection).

Beat you to it.

Game looks great. If its not the Gradius Gaiden engine, I'll be damned. The only thing I don't like about the visuals is that the game is REALLY pushing for that Gradius Gaiden feel but there's almost no colored lighting. Come on Konami, The wii isn't a beast, but my 15 year old PC can do colored lighting, and it does surprisingly add to the Gradius experience (Don't believe me? You obviously havent played Gaiden or V.)

Controls. I've only played NES mode (I turned on my Wii actually to buy and play Life Force! Surprise! have some new Gradius with your old Gradius.) And it handles really well. This is the kinda stuff that makes me excited that I still own a Wii that I never play.

Game. Its Gradius, what do you expect, If not, have some text adventure:
>West
You cant go that way.
>East
Oh shit! A bunch of rocks are now exploding from the two mountians you see infront of you.
>Help
Try shooting, its worked wonders for you so far.
On a serious note, however, Vic Viper lost all of the maneuverability that it had in... <previous Gradius game here>. Seriously. I had to get 3 speed ups before I felt like I was moving.

Whatever, the games a blast. go play it.

I found the SNES-style graphics to be nice, but yeah, could've been slightly better. I'm stuck at the 2nd boss. Anyone know how to unlock the extra stuff?

BTW, Konami Code does work, but only once per play (meaning, you gotta go to the Title Screen & start over if you want to use it again).

It's such a shame there's no multi-player. Only a leaderboard....

From what I've read, there's more weapon layouts that you can unlock. You also have to beat the game twice for some "real" ending.

I really don't give a fuck that there's no multiplayer. Most Gradiuses are single-player (not counting 2-player alternating mode).

So yeah, I, being a Gradius fanatic, picked this up today, having been shocked that it actually made it to North America after 6 months and me starting to feel hopeless. Even knowing that the game is only 5 stages, it's still quite fun to play, and the bosses have some surprising tricks up their sleeve (Stage 3's boss comes to mind).

ReBirth reminds me much of the MSX Nemesis series, with all the shout outs to it:
- The pilot's name is James Burton.
- James's CO is Venom (wait, wasn't he the villain in Nemesis 2, 3, and Gradius V?)
- The powerup sound is from the Nemesis series.
- The game is set in the year 6664.
- There's a bit more plotline than your usual Gradius (similar to Nemesis).
- One song is lifted straight out of Nemesis 2 (at least two others are from the Famicom version of Gradius 2).
- See the walls for the Stage 3 boss? They're the pillar things from Nemesis 2 stage 1.

but stage 4's ribcages can die in a fire

So it's a prequel to the MSX games then.

Its statements like that that made me wish that the Wii had online multiplayer for virtual console games. Life Force is fucking fun.

And a sequel to the first game.

I believe the timeline goes like this for the early Gradius games and the MSX games:

Gradius
Gradius Rebirth
Gradius/Nemesis 2 (MSX)
Salamander/Life Force
Gradius II (arcade)
Gofer no Yabou Episode II/Nemesis 3 (MSX)
Gradius III
...and so on...

I think the Game Boy ones fit in there somewhere, since Rebirth's supposed to have remixes of Nemesis GB and Interstellar Assault's music.

Goddamn Stage 4. It's the only thing I really hate about this game right now. At least the game slows way the hell down to give you a chance to dodge that shit. And it's not even fair like 5 was; the hitbox is gigantic on this game. Gets me in trouble a lot, especially since I've been playing a lot of 5 lately and am all too used to its hitbox (and my beloved Formation (not Spread, Formation goddamnit) Options, oh how I miss them).

Regardless, it's still great. Still can't decide what type I want to stick with; each one seems to work best for a certain stage (unlocking D and E didn't help either, too many choices now).

You might want to map a button to do shot but not missile. And switch to whatever laser you have.

Gradius V was alright, but like all the other installments that aren't Gradius Gaiden, it won't top Gaiden.

Its a shame that Gaiden cant be rereleased in a higher resolution.
