Marketplace Rating: 0 | Gran Turismo HD rumored to be sold as an incomplete game http://www.joystiq.com/2006/09/20/du...ars-or-tracks/ Quote:
Gran Turismo HD will supposedly see release in two versions. The first, entitled Gran Turismo HD: Premium, amounts to nothing more than a demo of, you guessed it, Gran Turismo 5. The 30 included cars and two undoubtedly exciting tracks are rendered in pristine PS3 glory and are meant to give you a solid idea of what Yamauchi and friends are putting together for a full release in 2008. Two more tracks and 30 extra cars can be purchased and downloaded for this version. If you prefer purchasing a full game instead of an extended prologue, perhaps Gran Turismo HD: Classic would be more your speed. Or perhaps not.
Though the Classic moniker may stem from the fact that you're getting a high resolution PS2 game, you may distinctly recall the original game actually giving you hundreds upon hundreds of cars for your $50. Not so with this version. Every car and every track may be purchased and downloaded from Sony's online network. The interview mentions a price of 50-100 yen per vehicle ($0.43 - $0.85) and 200 - 500 yen per track ($1.71 - $4.26). Being generous and sticking to the low end of the scale results in $408 spent if you want all 750 cars and all 50 tracks (roughly what you got in Gran Turismo 4). Moving up on the scale approaches values that surpass what you paid for the PS3 (newsflash: a lot) to begin with.
Is any of this true? 1UP's Luke Smith points to a more utopian quote (his version actually gives you one car!) by Sony's Phil Harrison that seems to match up with this story: "Imagine Gran Turismo shipping on a disc with one car and one track. And then you can browse, online, a dynamic circuit of vehicles that's growing every day because either the car manufacturers are adding new vehicles or we're adding new vehicles. And you can see a specific-type car that's being called up and say, 'I think I'll play with that one. Let me download and play it.'" Seems more likely that the quote created the story. Until Sony confirms (unlikely) or denies it later this week, consider this an entertaining vilification of the microtransaction and nothing more.
| Newsflash: Forza is better anyway. | |

Marketplace Rating: 2 | I was a little worried microtransactions were going to go this way but Jesus Christ, that's stretching it a little far. Downloading a dozen cars for five bucks on PGR3 or something is one thing, but that game's selection isn't nearly as all-encompassing as GT is, and to make one of the main selling points of GT into this is a little troubling.

$5 for a track is absurd...

With the way Sony is running it's PS3 operations (PS3 is already very close to becoming it's own meme, that's how absurd the whole project looks now), either Sony has to be insanely retarded or must have the biggest fucking trick ever hidden under a sleeve.

I don't know why this fourm is missing a TGS topic :/
Anyway... Sony had a keynote addrees today
Sony did not say anything important, it was quite boring actually.
However, the 20gig model has just become more of a deal. You get 20gig +H DMI now for $429(50,000 yen)[For those who are slow, Yes they dropped the price on the lower end model]. Keep in mind this only applies in Japan, but if this rolls out in other places at that same price, it could have a significant effect. I don't think the wireless has changed though, we should see tommrow. Sony is suppose to have a mroe inforamtive press confrence tommrow, this just was to open the confrence and for crazy Ken to talk his head off.

Besides, Gran Turismo's always been about earning the cars (or at least saving the Credits for them). Ever since GT3, they've slowly been straying from driving game with great competition to a pretty looking game with competition as a secondary. At least in GT3, when I pick a JGTC car, I know that I'm going to race with JGTC cars (or at least at the same HP), GT4's Single Race, I have to choose the Opponent Difficulty. And leaving it in the middle, the competition is still too easy. Go al the way to +10, out of your class range. Honestly, get the JGTC Z and race it with +10 difficulty, you have freakin' Le Mans prototypes against you.
The only thing that has attracted me to GTHD is that there will be more than just 6 cars at any given race. Finally. But it's not worth the money. If I'm going to have to pay for cars that I have sitting pretty in my GT4 garage, why? Same graphics (only minute changes seen on a HD monitor...), same exact courses (How many clips have we seen of Twin Ring Motegi SuperSpeedway, Nurburgring Nordschliefe, and Circuit de la Sarthe Le Mans?), same exact cars (oh, unless they merge Gran Turismo with Tourist Trophy, but meh. It's just Gran Turismo......with Tourist Trophy).
When Polyphony gets the sense to bring back Special Stage Route 11, Rome Circuit, Smokey Mountain North, and Pikes Peak, not to mention add time transition for endurance races (seriously, nothing better than to add a full 24 hour race (let alone 3) and replicate the circuits BEAUTIFULLY but leave out the day-night-day aspect of the races), let me know.

oh, while I'm here, lol @ GTHD and such. Though microtransactions are just one portion of the ever-growing shit demon that is online gaming. I will stop buying new games and systems once bullshit like this becomes the norm.

Besides, there won't be another crash, just a demographic shift. For every person like me who won't pay for this bullshit there's another retarded mouth-breather who just signed up on WOW to start their quest to 60 And Beyond. I wouldn't be too worried.

We are partly responsonsible for sony doing microtranstions and charging $1 for demos. People have to realize this isn't xbox live where you pay every month to keep server upkeep going and get free content as a result. Sony has to make money-seriously. They can't afford to make online totaly free. It's either halfway free or totally subscripton based.
Also let me take a smack at the wii while I'm at it. Nintendo is no differnt in this regard. Nintendo is offering free online capablites and we still have to pay for demos and classics and most are more then a $1. Like Nintendo, Sony is simply trying to make a profit so it can provide a service.
@$dogs I'm sorry to say, but I don't think online gaming is dying. PS3, Wii, X360, you will not able to escape it's grasp so get use to it. Developers are using online more and more.

Marketplace Rating: 0 | Oh I fully realize that online gaming isn't going away and that the servers won't pay for themselves.
Like I said, though, it's something that I won't support. Two fundamental reasons:
1) When it comes to games, I will only exchange physical money for physical goods and only conduct such an exchange one time.
2) The notion that I need to rely on other people to enjoy videogames is completely contrary to why I play videogames in the first place. I play videogames despite other people, not for them.

Although this release is equivalent to GT4 Prologue and isn't a full and proper GT game as such, you can bet your ass they're testing the waters with this. If it works--and it damn well might--then microtransactions are going to become a very big part of gaming as a whole. In this case it's not like a few neat little upgrades a la Oblivion, it's the meat of the damn game. I would hesitate to buy anything new if this became a trend.
