Default Help me with a nasty DRE

A few weeks back, I ordered GFDM V for PS2. Stuck it in, and I got about 10 DREs before the game loaded. It soon crashed, and I never got it back up. Did the whole "open it up and clean it out" thing, and tried again, with no success.

I sent it back to the seller, who told me they tested it out on two JPS2s, and that it was fine. They sent it back. Still didn't work. So I decided hey, I'll fiddle with the voltage. I tried EVERY NOTCH on that damn gear, and the only thing that happened was sometimes the DRE screen would pop up earlier. NG

Then a friend who had a copy offered to test mine on his PS2, and if it worked, to send me his. We did this, and mine worked on his so he sent me his copy. It doesn't work. Three PS2s play my game flawlessly so I'm quite sure my PS2 is at fault, despite that I never have any problems with the other disks I tried (DVD, PS one games, FFX Internation, IIDX games, Pop'n games, Rez).

I'm quite fucking pumped for this game, but I'm out of ideas as to how I might get it working. Are there any other methods for fixing DREs that do not involve getting a new one OR placing my current PS2 in mortal peril in the process of fixing it (IE not that hard)?

God damnit CStar why did you make me do that.

Yea try the voltage. I'm sure you know how to open up you ps2 and remove the cover of the disc drive. There are really tiny screws underneath the laser itself. You have to remove the actual laser and flip it upside down. Start by lowering the voltage for the dvd, then if it doesnt work increase it slightly. I mean like 2 degree turns or your going to blow the laser. You'll want some kind of marker or knife to mark where the original position is. I'd need to look up anything more specific than that, been awhile since I had to do it.

Is this PS2 modded or is it a JPS2?

Worst Logic ever. Literally. DRE are the easiest things to fix, and after you've done one, you pretty much know how to do them all. Charge people $5 for a fix and they'll do it. I got my PS2 for free by fixing one that was broken with a DRE.

If you are willing to open it up, send me a PM and I can probaly get you a good guide, or write out for you how to do it easily.

You'd really pay 120 dollars for something you can fix in half an hour? Send me all your old broken ps2s, i'll take them off your hands.

Find a local non-chain game store or a place that does repairs/buys dead systems and ask to just buy a laser out of a dead PS2. It's not a hard replacement to do, and all you need to ensure is that you get the right laser model.

Actually, chances are you don't even need to buy a new one. Most of them just get slightly dirty and should be swabbed with alchohol or get misaligned, in which case all you have to do is spin one gear.

I totally forgot about this

Anyway I've tried everything I know of, and nothing helped my DRE. As a matter of fact, since I posted this it's stopped loading anything period.

It's like 4 or 5 years old though; maybe replacing it is the best option.

If its stopped loading anything,
1. Your voltage is completely fucked up
2. You completely got it out of alignment when you were messing around (sounds likely)
3. Your laser is just dead.

Turn on the ps2 with the top off and laser exposed. DON'T look directly into the laser. (DUR DUR DUR!) See if the laser emits any light when your system boots. If it does you know its still trying to read, if it doesnt your laser is just gone or somethings not connected right. Honestly if the laser is gone, just get a new one, but you still might have a shot at getting it working.
