OK, so yeah, info. Sinistar was one of the many "twitch games" of the early 1980's, along with Defender, Temptest and Robotron: 2084. The object of the game was to destroy the Sinistar before it was completed. To do this you had to mine Crystals from the many planetoids to make "Sinibombs", then use them to destroy the Sinistar before it was finished. If the Sinistar was completed, you must destroy it, or you had better RUN, or you will DIE. Sinistar was also one of the first games to feature digital voice, the Sinistar would constantly taunt you ("I Am...Sinistar.") and would also warn you when it was done ("Beware, I Live."). When it was completed, you had almost no chance to survive, there would be no time to make your time. It would be so fast it would almost be a blur. If you didn't get that one lucky shot in to destroy one piece and slow it down, your chance of survival was virtually 0%, because the Sinistar WILL get you. Truly scary stuff in 1982.

In seriousness, though, my first experience with this was when I was about six years old in a shady Mexican restaurant. I had about seventy-five cents (I was living large) and spent it playing the Sinistar machine. The first game was kind of confusing, but once I figured out exactly what I needed to do the next two games, however brief, were that much more fun. It's never been a specialty but damn, it left an impression. I was startled the first time a Sinistar was completed and started rushing me.

My mom has told me stories of getting drunk at her friend's house and walking trashed to the gas station to play this game. And having played it, that would've been totally worth it and awesome.

So. It's about 2000, and we've just bought our first surround sound system. And then my parents head out for a weekend. Now, fun story, as if you can't guess: I'm a geek. I didn't throw a drunken party or anything, no, I invited buddies over and we gamed all night. But at about 3 AM on Sunday, one of us came up with the idea to see what my PC sounded like with surround sound. Hooked it up, booted up some random tracks... and then someone pointed to a Williams Arcade Collection icon. We fucked around with it, Defender, Joust, etc.
It's 4 AM. And a combination of bad shit happened. We played Sinistar + someone nodded off ON THE REMOTE + volume went to max...
...and the Sinistar was finished. Full on BOOM, I swear the house shook... "BEWARE, I LIVE."
I think the only thing that kept the police from coming was that nobody could pinpoint what house on the block the noise came from. | |
