Wow someone who isn't a biased fanboy, that realizes almost every console has some great games. Amazes me someone else actually owns Steel Battallion, I was so addicted to that game.

I love the original Giga Wing. What platforms was it made for?
CPS2 or Dreamcast.

The dreamcast version is actually better than the arcade board. They fixed the slowdown and even added a 5th character called "loner" or "stranger" or something. (I don't remember).

I like games that follow more outrageous power-up trees. I'm not enjoying a shooter as much as I could be unless my fire covers half the goddamned screen.
Heh which one? I just bought 3 for neo-geo. The guy in the dolphin suit was awesome. 3 was always funnier since theres the retarded storyline with "engrish".

Why was I not informed of the existence of this thread?

Life Force was the 2nd NES game I ever owned. (<3 the only good Salamander, besides 2 of course)

You all know how stupidly too much I play Gradius. I dont need to go into details.

Ive been playing Super Star Soldier on my Wii (<3 Virtual Console) and really enjoying it. Dodging the 328432987465 powerups is fun while trying not to get hit by shit that will actually kill you.

I just want Gradius VI to come out.

Im also saddened that the OP missed Parodius. Very very saddened.

Edit: alot of people call these games Shooters. Your definition of Shooters seems to be "First Person Shooters" or the dreaded exact-clone-of-the-game-you-played-last-year.

I eventually played all of them and 3 was far and away my favorite.

A Shooter/Shmup Thread (and small history)

It'd be cool if a console port of Pink Sweets would ever be announced.

No love for Axelay (spite of being weirdly executed), Twinkle Star Sprites, Aero Fighters or Echo Fighters?

Always wanted to try Earth Defense Force

Though I admit it was pretty fun... IMO it's not as great as other SHMUPs, it was relatively too easy.

Anyone besides me remember Philosoma for PS1? It wasn't very good, but it changed perspective a whole bunch of times and was pretty interesting to play as a result.

Anybody got 100 points to spare?

Speaking of Gradius, I find Vertical to be the most useful Double weapon (I use it in place of Laser sometimes for a change of pace and go as far as I can with it sometimes).

It depends on the Gradius with me

1 + 2 + 3 + 4 - 45 Double
Gradius V - Free Way / 45 Double / Tailgun
Gradius Galaxies - Doesnt matter, all doubles the same
Gaiden - Round laser or Auto Aim II are most useful.
Parodius - 45 Double (Read: Vic Viper)
Gokujou and Sexy Parodius - Spread Bomb (read: Hikaru)
Talkative Parodius - Ripple Laser (Read: Lord British)

Notes:
I play Gradius 1 very strangely. I use Double for levels (other than 1) and switch to laser near the end so I can efficiently Destroy The (Big)Core.

The standard Double has always been good for me...there've been instances where an added Tailgun (ala Galaxies/Generations) would've been nice though. As far as switching weapons mid-level goes, it's not that strange...especially when using the E-Laser in 3...it does wonders for boss slaying, but is crap for the stages themselves.

Vic Viper's Double-II in Gaiden has a angled shot and a tailgun.

This may just be me, but Twinkle Star Sprites is one of those games that are really good, yet people always forget to mention in favorites lists.

I still prefer parodius when it comes to absolutely retarded cute anime shooting.
