Default (MAME) Playing shooters in a different rotation

This may seem rather odd, but does anyone here play shmups on a different rotation (for example, playing Gradius like a TATE shooter [and reconfiguring controls to match the aspect], and playing DonPachi like a YOKO shooter [vice-versa with the TATE Gradius situation)? If so, does it seem to help or hinder gameplay? I just thought this was a rather interesting, albeit esoteric and awkward, topic to put up.

If you want, I can post videos on YouTube on this so I can show you what I mean.

This topic originally applies to people who use MAME on their PC using a keyboard and no arcade cabinet or controls (I tend to be a WASD/JKL player in shmups), but I suppose the arcade controls website would do for those WITH an arcade cabinet.

I tried several times to play vertical danmaku shooters sideways. Theoretically, since I'm first and foremost a Gradius player, it would help, but more often than not it just gets in the way.

I play just about any game using an arcade stick with 8 buttons, by the way.

I played Ikaruga on the horizontal setting to get better at weaving up and down for other games, then realized that was rather pointless since Ikaruga is the only shmup I still play.

Everything looks more epic going up->down than right->left imo

You able to reconfigure the controls so the "right" input doesn't become down on the screen and "up" doesn't become right?

As soon as I export it on .WMV, then I'll post a demonstration of me actually doing GOOD on Gradius III on YouTube (sadly, I can only get 1/3rds into level 2 so far). I actually played the game in this orientation and is not an excuse to post a sideways video of a video game.

Ikaruga on the Dreamcast has a setting that rotates the screen and controls to horizontal or vertical, whichever you prefer (vertical is default).

Whether the arcade version or GCN version has it, I'm not sure.

All the PS2 Cave shooters look ass on YOKO, especially Mushihimesama, so TATE is a must.

Okay. Got that step covered.

The thing is this: don't rotate your screen. If possible, reconfigure the controls so it'll look like you're playing the game like a YOKO shooter. That's what I'm pointing out.

Mushihimesama doesn't have that option, and neither does IBARA. I know for sure ESPGaluda and DoDonPachi Dai-Ou-Joudoes though.

This is entirely possible in Dodonpachi dai-ou-jou, as control and monitor orientation are set independently. I don't know about any others, though.
