Well, I've been into NDS homebrew for a long while. I found some nice cool stuffs out what you can do with your DS what you never should be possible to do with it [: All you need is a flashed DS (so a DS with a custom firmware: FlashMe), a GBA Flashcart and not needed but recommended, a wireless router [: I bet most of you allready heard something about it, but doesnt know what kind of cool stuffs you can do with it ; D
First about my Flashcart, I have a M3 Adapter, which is a flashcart where you need to insert some storage media. Mine uses Compact Flash cards and I have a 1GB one [: There are other variations of the M3 adapters for SD, Mini SD etc which are alot smaller (the CF one really sticks out far of your DS Lite) but I prefer the CF cause the compattibility is very high with everything [:
K, now enhogh flashcart talk, lets take a look at the coolest most usefull NDS Homebrews!
MEDIA APPS: MoonShell
Moonshell is a module based shell for the NDS. It targets to media files mostly, and you can run all kinds of media files on your DS. MP3, MIDI, SPC, DPG (Which is a custom MPEG Container), OGG, TXT, DOC and many more! This is really a must have for homebrewers [:
EMULATORS: NesDS
Just a normal NES Emulator which runs full screen and is at full speed with sound [:
SnesDS & Snezzi DS
SnesDS is a port of SNesAdvance which allows you to play SNES roms on the DS [: While there's not much worked on SnesDS anymore Snezzi DS is a recently developed SNES Emulator. It doesnt work as good as SnesDS yet, but time will come [: See here for a compattibility list for SnesDS
http://luffy.free.fr/nds/snesds_compat/index.php PicoDrive DS
Sega Genesis emulator. No sound yet, but run Genesis roms at decent speed [:
ScummVM DS
ScummVM is a port of ScummVM which is an interpreter that allows you to play Lucasarts' back catalog of point and click adventure games on modern computers (Monkey Island anyone? ;\/ ). Playing click and point games with touchscreen is cool [:
COOL APPS: BeUp
A MSN Messenger client for Nintendo DS : D
SylphIRC
IRC Client for Nintendo DS which works pretty well [: Youll have to get used to the interface but if you do, its cool [:
SylphAMP
Stream you WinAmp on your PC to your Nintendo DS, complete with tracklists and all [: You just need to install it in winamp as an output plugin and it should work after youre succesfully connected : D
DS Linux
Mhyeah, like the title said [: No GUI (yet), but WIFI is fully working, so you can use telnet for reading mail etc etc and there's also a working port of Retawq, a text based webbrowser [:
ReinMoon
From the makers of MoonShell, a save manager for your backupped and original DS games. You can transfer savegames from and to those media.
Tales of Dagur
A fully free completed RPG with storyline and all! It looks really nice (Sprites style [: ) and its really enjoyable! A must have!
A touch of war
A fully working homebrew RTS with online play! Cool to play with [:
DS Organise
Turn your DS in a PDA! This app contais a calendar, contacts manager (with Vcard import function), calculator and many many more!
These are just the apps I use most often, there are many more cool apps and hacks out! Like if you have a V5 DS (the last batch of "old" DS') you can mod the firmware to get the DS Lite brightness on your old DS! Hacks like that you can play offline tracks in MKDS online is also cool and all kinds of trainers for various games and such. If someone has more questions about all of this or how excatly to do this, just ask and ill tell [: After you have all the equipment youll discover that there's a whole new underground world to explore next to the commercial games on your handheld ; D
