The plight of the PS3.

Japan's Ge-Maga magazine asked a couple questions to PS3 developers in Japan, and the polls are now back. The outlook isn't that good. . .

• 90.29% of Japanese developers think the PS3 is too expensive. One developer: "It's more expensive than my rent."

• 56.31% hate Sony's two SKUs. "There are fears that confusion will develop amongst users and retailers."

• 55.82% don't think the launch title line-up will sell the system.

• 62.13% of all game devs think that the PS3 won't sell 6 million units by March, 2007.

The last one is going to be true because I don't think Sony will even be able to make 6 million units by 2007 with a worldwide launch slated.

Before you start casting stones at me, I acknowledge that the PS3 has a built in blu-ray dvd player and that most HD DVD players are somewhere in the thousands of dollars in cost. Which means the PS3 could be a repeat of the PS2, being the cheapest media player on the market along with being a gaming console, which caused the PS2 to fly off the shelves in Japan.

however, that will be pretty meaningless in the US, which is (arguably) a bigger market than Japan.

I know very few people (again, this is the US) that bought a PS2 because it could play DVDs.

couple that with the fact that few homes have the needed setup to benefit from the higher quality of HDTV (let alone blu-ray) and I think those developers are pretty spot-on.
