I get that it's a pedometer and you put one of your pkmns on it. What else does it do? Some gaming websites say that you can catch pkmn and obtain rare(?) items with it and how the hell is that possible.

You walk and get "watts" (Energy/Time) which you can spend on uses of the PokeRadar, or the Dousing machine. You can use the first to catch up to 3 pokemon and the later to find up to 3 items. Resync with your cartridge and you can do it all again, but any watts you've saved get transfered to the DS to unlock new routes, so you have to walk more every time.

Marketplace Rating: 0 | And the last opened route via walking takes 100,000 watts to get. It's 20 steps per watt, so that's about 2 million steps.
Not to mention that it was stated that, in order to get that much, you should be walking upwards of 1000 miles by the end of it...you'll be at this for a while. Suggested use was to walk 10,000 steps (5 milles, give or take) a day, getting it in around 200 days.
Additionally, there will be other routes that are unlocked with events. From April 1st-30th there will be the Yellow Forest route that goes up on Nintendo Wi-Fi that you can obtain via Mystery Gift. This has nothing but Pikachu in it and also gives the ability to catch Surfing Pikachu and Flying Pikachu provided that you have walked enough steps in one day to get them (if I remember right, about 9000-10000).
I had mine strapped at work just to see how much I'd do in 10 hours. 3103 steps and I really didn't do that much. The detecting of steps, though, is a bit dodgy...but so are most pedometers.
Few friend of mine have this game as well. Already took two wins and have an Alakazam lined. Should have a Gengar and Machamp here soon. Got through Whitney earlier...probably will hit Morty soon. | |

Really? I wore mine for just 6 hours and got 12000 steps, admittedly I was doing a SHITLOAD of work, moving computers out of my job, so it was like a hundred steps a minute for a while. That day I did walk about 20000 steps.
I already have all 16 badges and have done my first pass at the Pokemon league, so, I'm not entirely impressed with the difficulty of this game. It was really much easier than I thought it would be (You know, after the bum-rape that Diamond/Pearl/Platinum were even when you were type-advantaged) and I basically walked through the entire game. Although I'm doing alot of exploring and experience farming now to further my pokedex, so we'll see how it goes.

However, apparently to level the blocks up to find rarer Pokemon it requires you to wait 250 days

| is this including the fact that there were only 2 fire types available in the whole game (pre-national)? Because I couldn't finish my Pearl version for lack of decent pokemon
also how does dousing machine work

It should hum a low tone and show a faint grey circle on the radar screen to show that you're using it. You can then move your stylus across the entire area of the radar to see if there are any "warm" spots in a specific direction. If the radar continues to show the faintly grey circle, you're not near an item and you'll have to move somewhere else.
If you're getting close to a hidden item with the Dowsing Machine in use, squares on the radar will get brighter the closer in proximity you get to the item (as well as the Dowsing Machine's tone becoming more high pitched). Once you're within range of it, the item will show up as a small dot on the radar. Get one square's length away from the dot, face it and press "A". Ta-dah, you got a hidden item!
Remember, you have to constantly hold down the stylus on the radar screen, otherwise, the Dowsing Machine won't pick up any item signals.
EDIT:
Also - HOLY CHEESEBALLS BATMAN.
Managed to get INCREDIBLY lucky and have my legendary encounter at the Whirl Islands be that of a shiny Lugia.
Snapped this pic with my phone while on Victory Road to quell "Pics or it didn't happen". The pic isn't amazing, but it's enough:
