Default PS3 [ XMB Games running 1080p but Disc are running 720p]

Here's something interesting i'm running across with my PS3 and maybe you folks can shed some light on this situation:

I'm currently using a 22'' LCD (Samsung 2232BW) which has a native resolution of 1680x1050. Going through HDMI, i wasn't expecting my PS3 to be able to output 1080p on this guy, but on the XMB, it is!

So the XMB looks just as crisp as if i'm running my PC into the monitor (despite it's native resolution).

The issue really lies in the fact that when i'm running a game disc, it automatically jumps the signal back down to 720p (or rather, the monitor itself is running 768).
I do understand that some games don't broadcast in 1080p, yes, but I'm fully aware of that! ~ But here's where i'm confused:

Any game that RUNS from the XMB directly (Tekken DR, High Velocity Bowling, Super Stardust) is ACTUALLY running in 1080p (again, despite it being a 1050 resolution monitor). I'm not losing ANY picture quality, and I can't believe how define everything looks. But when i try to run MGS4 or any blu-ray movie, it jumps back down to 720p/768!

I've already set my ps3 to run only in 1080p (though 480p is checked by default).

I wish i can actually take a screen cap, or a photo with a digital camera to further explain what i'm experiencing, but that'll have to wait.

Is anyone else experiencing this? If you have a 22'' monitor and a ps3, please test this out! And if you are familiar, is there a solution as to where i can keep a Game Disc running in 1080p?

I'm doing one final test to see if my understanding is correct, i'm going to borrow Gran Turismo 5 from a friend AND download the Demo. If the Demo (which is accessed from the XMB) is clearer than the Game Disc.... Then i hope there's a work around for this issue!

[in short, running a 22'' 1680x1050 LCD ~ XMB is actually running 1080p fine but game disc are running 720p though 720p is not checked in the Display Settings]

THANKS in advance if you take the time to read or reply to this!

are you running 2.4 firmware?
I have a Samsung 24" monitor using HDMI > DVI and my disc games dont drop to 720p
but then again my monitor supports 1900x1200

are you using component? or HDMI?

Well lucky that fw 2.4 worked for you.

It was pulled in less than a day after release (due to some users experiencing bricking problems).

It will most probably return as version 2.41

P.S.
Personally though, the most enthusiastic thing for me about this update is the trophies feature (like what they use for XBOX LIVE)..............and the fact that MPG movies play much better than before.

Yes, i'm using 2.4 ~ no problems so far ^_^''

I'm using a HDMI > DVI myself. Just got the Qore magazine and that is running in 1080p on my 1050 monitor...

I just finished DLing Naruto Ninja Storm Demo so i'll see if this is going to run in 1080p for me. I'm just so frustrated about this, I've been trying to figure out how to force it to stay at 1080p for the last few hours >,<''
