Marketplace Rating: 1 | PSP firmware question This weekend im gonna buy a PSP but in order to get the best for my buck I need to get some information. I've heard that PSP's with 3.11 firmware are like homebrew cereal killers and nothing works. What I'm wondering is if the PSPs at the moment are in 3.11 or it must be upgraded to be 3.11 in order to get to 3.11?

My money would be on 3.00 or something like that. Consider that they've probably been sitting on the shelves for a few weeks.

Marketplace Rating: 0 | if I'm right, 2.8 is the last shipped firmware D:.
Even if you do go buy a "new" one, its VERY possible that you could get a firmware as old as 2.5/2.6 it all depends on how long the PSP has been sitting on the shelf, there is a way through the serial to tell if you what firmware you get.
Though if I'm right everythings cracked right now, so its a non-question.

Not only is it much cheaper, but you can upgrade it to a special, hacked edition of the newest firmware that lets you run homebrew. This includes a fullspeed PS1 Emulator, a Fullspeed GBA Emulator, a whole punch of other nice independent projects including halfway decent music production software, and a (so far very slow, but may be able to be fullspeed in the future) N64 Emulator.
Check you DCEmu The Home of Homebrew and Emulation News- Covering PSP Nintendo DS GP2X GP32 GBA GB Micro PS2 PS3 Dreamcast Xbox xbox360 wii tapwave zodiac gizmondo nokia n-gage if you want to know more, that's where I generally go for this sort of thing. Also, while I believe all firmwares are currently cracked, an older board in the psp (a non TA-82) makes it a lot easier and generally better to run homebrew.

You'll need a memstick that's at least 64mb, too, since the default 32mb isn't large enough to get all the files you need for upgrading onto it. If you have any other questions feel free to ask!

Of course you don't absolutely NEED to, as not every game will require it (if any.) It's a pretty self explanatory process, and is outlined on the official site.

I'm bored of PC gaming and want to start playing my PSP again. I occasionally (randomly) go to PSPUpdates and see icon changers and stuff for the default XMB for higher firmware versions, and it even appears that it doesn't work for 1.50 and stuff?

It does seem that since they cracked one of the newer ones, Sony has no where to run with new firmware it seems, I've not been keeping to hip with it recently, but thats certainly how it seems. Sony should have known that exploits would come, they're wasting their time and resources to patch things that get compromised a week or month later :/

The functionality so far seems stellar...for 1.5 homebrew all I've had to do is make a folder called GAME150 on my memstick and run 1.5 programs out of there. It's run all the stuff I've thrown at it so far and I really like the PS1 emulation. Give it a try, if you don't like it you can always downgrade.

Marketplace Rating: 0 | I would prefer custom firmware over 1.50 + DevHook. DevHook seems to me like oldschool, however it is a bit safer because its just a program that emulates the firmware you want. With custom firmware, you skip the step of having to load DevHook. The firmware you use (in my case, 3.10 OE-A') is like a mix of 1.5 and 3.10, which means I can do everything 1.5 can (play homebrew, etc) and I have all of 3.10's functionalities. And all I do is flick a switch to get it to that. TA-082 mobos have been bypassed (because I have one and had to wait for a downgrader to downgrade to 1.5 from 2.71).
Oh here is another site to add to your list of sites: PSP Hacks · Hacks, PSP Downloads, Cracks, Mods, Homebrew, Utilities · Hack Sony Play Station Portable
I get all my information from there.
