Marketplace Rating: 0 | The Shenmue series Appreciation Thread This is a thread dedicated to one game series that has yet to continue that really pushed gaming forward.
All of the borrowed elements from other games and the realistic simulation went together really well... and the storyline... although cliche at the beginning really shines strongly...
Other titles have not come close to properly using a budget like this one has and hopefully will continue to do so in the future (Shenmue Online)

Shenmue, probably one of the best game sagas I've played. The first time I went to the Yokosuka arcades to play Space Harrier (inserting tokens first, of course) I smiled.
Oh, and Ryo was plainly stupid (or gay). Nozomi was desiring him, and he didn't even notice. GAWD.

I REALLY enjoyed this game it was fun and the adventures you went on were exciting
The story really got me into it and the environment was astonishing
Its a shame though that its not making another sequel (well ive heard of a possibility where they might release something for the PC or something but its only if people had it in high demand)
How is it though that this game isnt getting a sequel? I had always thought that this game was really popular (one of the first Xbox/Dreamcast games i got)
from where they left off THEY NEED to make another one
how long is this story anyways i had heard that its based on novels and there are like.... 20 novels.... and apparently shenmue 1+2 only gotten through like 1-2 novels

That PC thing you are talking about is "Shenmue Online". I saw the trailer of that thing some time ago and it looked good.
I think that project was canned.
And supposedly, AM2 of Cri (and probably Yu Suzuki himself) was studying the possibility to make Shenmue 3 in this new generation of consoles. The strongest rumor I've heard so far is about a Shenmue 1 + 2 + 3 thingy for the XBox 360 (yes, remade Shenmue 1 and 2 PLUS Shenmue 3). Of course, it's just a rumor, so don't get excited about it.
Shenmue 1 was relatively popular on the Dreamcast (one of the best selling games for that Platform... in America, at least). Shenmue 2... I dunno, though I know the XBox version didn't do that great, spite of having a lot of graphical and gameplay improvements. Probably the loading times and the BLARGHY dubbing had something to do with it.
Yes, there are 20 chapters. Shenmue 1 covers the 1st chapter, Yokosuka (the largest one, it seems) and Shenmue 2 convers the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th chapters (2 dedicated to Hong Kong, 1 dedicated to the second city, which name I forgot, and 1 dedicated entirely to Sha Hua). And before you ask about the 2nd chapter (the Ship), it's exclusively featured in Shenmue 2 for XBox, as a "comic" , and you need to take photos to certain characters in the game to unlock it.

My only complaint with the game is that sometimes I would put it down for a bit, then I would come back and it took me a while to figure out what I was doing again.
I finished 1, but not 2... :-\

Anyhow they should have never put it on the Xbox... it's the kind of game that would sell better on the PS2... Xbox users generally play racers, FPS, and PC style RPGs.

Oh, and for the record, the line is "Do you want to play a game of Lucky Hit?"
Also, forklift races for life. Shenmue is one of those really cool games that has so many things wrong with the little things that they stick out and you can't shake 'em.

And I have Shenmue II's UK version for the DC. I don't think I want to touch the XB version after what I've seen of its dub.
The DC version was good, the XB version... not so much.
With any luck, they'll just think of a way for 3 to finish it. I wish they had time to take the series to the lengths they originally wanted, but that's probably not going to happen.

Marketplace Rating: 5 | The first shenmue i thought was personally boring. All you did was go around and you had to keep on talking to people that led you to more people, and more people. The second shenmue i enjoyed a lot more. Hopefully they do make a sequel for the 360. That would be aweessoome!!

Marketplace Rating: 0 | I remember playing this game I HAD to get all the little collectible figurines of VF characters from the machines at the store. This game sucked my life away for a good 2 months when I was a kid, simply because I had to finish EVERYTHING.
And the extra mode after you beat it where you get to do the huge fight thing was fun as hell.
Fuck this I'm gonna play it.

The DC version was good, the XB version... not so much. | So should I try and find the UK version of it? Is it really that much better. But overall Shenmue is the best Dreamcast game ever made and is SO overlooked its not even funny.
Oh and playing Darts for days on end is so fun, even though it doesn't sound like it.

And yeah, Shenmue is great and all that. They really do need to finish it, but for me it just wouldn't be the same on anything other than the Dreamcast.

Dub-aside, the XBox version of Shenmue 2 was waaaay better than the Dreamcast version. It had graphical and gameplay updates, including the new feature with the camera (to unlock the 2nd chapter) plus other shit. OH, and the controls are better.
