Marketplace Rating: 5 | Sony fucks self in ass, world looks on in awe. From the official PS3 site.
"Video output in HD requires cables and an HD-compatible display, both sold separately. Copy-protected Blu-ray video discs can only output at 1080p using an HDMI cable connected to a device that is compatible with the HDCP standard. HDMI cable not included. Additional equipment may be required to use the HDMI connector."
PS3 will be unable to play high definition Blu-ray movies out of the box.

Okay, I know the general consensus on any Sony platform is "wait for the second wave", but this is just getting ridiculous to an astounding degree. If you need to buy more equipment on a $500 (minimum!) system to get one of the fucking selling points... wow.
I just can't think of anything to say that's not an expression of shock.

its pretty crappy though that you still have to pay them even more money just to be able to do something that should be a standard kind of thing for thier console.

BTW, where's the new Parodius, Konami?

Hell, Konami needs more self-spoofs, period. It's good to know they'll turn more than one title on its ear, though.

If I don't see a proper revival of Lord British soon, I'm going to delete all of my Gradius-related ROMs.

All they are saying is you need to buy HDMI cables and have a TV with HDMI inputs. You had to buy your s-video cables and a tv with s-video for your ps2 didn't you?
All the "additional equipment" means is, you might have to buy a HD TV to use blu-ray if you don't already have one. It says that on like every damn piece of electronic equipment. Perhaps your tv only accepts DVI inputs and you will need an adaptor. Thats all its saying.

They'll be fine. But people who are thinking they might upgrade for the PS3, save some money, get a Blu-Ray setup AND the next big console? They're shafted. Especially people who don't talk tech like most of us on these boards, and won't get it immediately.
As well, I don't recall Sony trying to sell the PS2 on the promise of S-Video (although this may just be my memory), whereas in this case, "Blu-Ray from your PS3" is being mentioned more than a little in trying to get this product out the door. It's pretty dirty, attempting to hawk the product in one aspect without covering it fully. It's as if they wanted to sell you a DVD player, say, that didn't come with the required input cables. You could hook it up with a little extra, but frankly, you expect all you need to do so to be in the box from the beginning.

| Well holy shit! You have to buy video cables for electronic equipment! Besides the basics they give you! Haven't you ever purchased home theater equipment? Most dvd players come with a standard set of composite cables, and really who actually uses those? Its not as if they are going to give you fiberoptics and Component cables for your player. Thats up to you.
Ok if you own an HDTV you own HDMI cables, don't try to tell me you don't. If you don't own an HDTV your not going to be playing blu-ray in the first place so theres not really a problem on sony's end there.
Seriously, they are fucking cables. My god they are like 10 dollars! Who the fuck cares?! You had to buy a memory card to save your ps2 games didn't you? Extra 30-40 dollars. Sure you can "play" the games, but you really can't without a memory card.
Sorry If I sound irrate, but Its boggling my mind that people are whining over having to buy cables to use their new equipment. Does anyone whining actually own an HDTV that is going to be used for their ps3, that can't afford an extra 10 dollars after spending 600 dollars?
P.S. Oh I just used s-video as an example that higher end cables don't come with consoles. Dont look too much into it.

If I misinterpreted the subtext, it seems pretty oddly worded. Will the movies not play in 1080i, or will they not play at all?

| So why are you paying for it if you don't want it? Just... don't buy it perhaps? Oh wait you want the new console I see. See if they did it for people who refuse to upgrade their stuff, we'd have another ps2 harddrive problem. Sony finally realized "Console gamers don't buy hardware upgrades". They just don't. Creates too many problems for developers.
