from final fantasy tactics
to disgaea 2
There have been a lot of popular ones. But today, many are overlooked, especially the old ones like X-com
What tactics games have been ignored by the general populace that shouldn't have been?
I propose rebelstar tactical command, the spiritual succsesor to X-Com
any others?

Marketplace Rating: 2 | The first two Fallout games' combat systems were based on traditional turn-based startegy titles, built around the ideas of movement, combat and cover with a set number of action points per turn. Fallout Tactics was a strict combat game and sucked ass, though, so I'd recommend sticking to the first two games.
Silent Storm is a wonderfully deep strategy title from Nival that has random battles, ragdoll physics, and fully destructible environments. If there are some Germans lurking on the second floor of a building, have your machine gunner carve out a window and then chuck a grenade through to blow out the side of the building. Mop up the remainder with your sniper. You can sneak your way through with some scouts or go balls to the wall with a bunch of heavies. Amazing, amazing game.

Marketplace Rating: 7 | DEFINITELY Jagged Alliance 2. You will be hard-pressed to find a game more strategic, by the literal sense of the word. It's an isometric grid-based & turn-based game set in a fictional third-world country, and you hire mercenaries to try to overthrow a dictator that has a tight grip on the country by liberating towns and training militia to defend themselves.
As far as strategic elements go, it takes EVERYTHING into account. Each of your (up to) 6 characters can stand, crouch, and go prone, each with their own distinct advantages. You can take shelter behind rocks, tall grass, buildings, trees, whatever - each gives you cover from enemy fire. Time of day also plays a HUGE role in the game, especially when you trick out your merc with night vision goggles, a laser scope and a bipod for a hefty sniper rifle. You can take an entire grid worth of enemies out without being seen.
You can pick this up online for no more than 10 dollars usually, and it's one of the best purchases you could make. I almost want to say I enjoy it more than Fallout and Fallout 2 - maybe not for story, but definitely for gameplay. The mercs you hire can say some seriously funny stuff too. http://www.trendverlag.de/wspic/JAWildfireB.jpg
here's an image from the expansion, which upped your merc squad limit from 6 to 10 (I never went above 5 myself, but some people like having a swarm of mercs) and I from the look of it, upped the resolution quite a bit too. It's a good example of how the layout of battle looks.

Take your standard 32-bit era JSRPG and sprinkle in a lot of very bizarre music and dialog, with a dash of blasphemy. It's a hell of a ride. If you haven't played any of them, try finding a ROM of B/M 0 (and then graduate to 00 on PS1 if you like it) or just avoid PS2 B/M II.

I loved that game on the SNES (hell, it actually inspired me to write a guide for it on GameFAQs at the time), and having it to go would just be all kinds of awesome.

Eight kingdoms, two hundred soldiers on screen at once, two generals per battle, and upwards of eighty at the chosen ruler's command, spread over around a hundred castles.
It's not my favorite SRPG of all time, but it was definitely my first love.
Of course, it was for Saturn, so it couldn't be more niche than that.

Im working on Drake now (That will finish the Allied Nations) | I actually feel like doing it myself. Though the campaign at this point in time is just getting annoying and I'm probably not even half done with it.

I got up to 296 medals before I sold my DS. Until I get a new job and can afford to replace it, it looks like it'll remain there. Fucking OCD.

Fucking OCD. | Yeah Im up to like 180. the Hard Campaign is exactly what it sounds like. Right now Im having fun with turn survival though, because its a surprisingly good way to rank COs, that isnt doing the first 4 missions of the hard campaign over and over.
