To put it simply, touhou is a shmup series. But that doesn't begin to cover it. Never have I played a shmup series with such developed characters, and such beautiful music. The stories aren't bad, and the conversations can be hilarious.
There are 11 games in the series, although one is a fighter, and there are a few other unnoficial spinoffs. 5 of them are for PC-98, an old Japanese computer, and are playable through an emulator, and can be quite a bit of fun. 6-9 (except 7.5) are all shooters, and 9 is a versus shooter, similar to Twinkle Star Sprites. 7.5 is a fighting game, with a heavy emphasis on projectiles, and 9.5 is a game where you take pictures of the enemy bullet patterns.
The games are not very difficult to clear compared to other shooters, no matter how difficult they seem at first. Personally, I like the 8th game the best, because it feels most developed, although the difference between difficulties can be massive.
In order for more information, there are three links in my sig, use them well.
Enjoy.

While I do like how ZUN is focusing his games on bullet patterns, it takes away the entire "hey, guys, let's blow some shit up" feeling of traditional shmups. CAVE titles such as Dodonpachi maintain a decent amount of curtain fire along with blowing stuff up, as does Ikaruga. But when you think of Mushihime and Shikigami, they're all bullet-based. | |

I can beat all of these games on easy consistantly without continuing (well, except for maybe EoSD, but that's tough), and can probably get close on PCB normal, nowhere near it on IN normal, and sometimes PoFV normal.
Also, honestly, I find ikaruga NOTHING like these games due to the fact you aren't dodging near as much in it.

Marketplace Rating: 0 | Isn't there a fighting game based on the Touhou series? I had played one at Anime USA last year, and I never found out where you could get it. I think it was called Touhou Suimusou: Something and something power, or something like that. Anyone know anything about it?

Marketplace Rating: 0 | Is "Megamari Marisa no Yabou" a Touhou game? Found the torrent on 4chan and saw the screenshots. It looks like a Megaman-style game, with the Touhou witches.
BTW, I can't make it run. Everytime I try to play it, the game says it needs a DLL. I'll screencap the error window and post it later, so anyone can tell me what's wrong
BTW, was the Touhou fighter made by the same team that programmed Eternal Fighter Zero?

Marketplace Rating: 0 | The touhou fighter is Touhou Suimosou: Immaterial and Missing Power, also the only touhou game with a gamefaqs page.
Megamari Marisa no Yabou, or MegaMari, is an unofficial spinoff by the guys who made Immaterial and Missing Power. There is also a game called Super Marisa Land, or Marisala, which is a mario clone, although very difficult to play. I have no clue what to do about your problem, sorry ;/.
Yes, Immaterial and Missing Power was made by the Eternal Fighter Zero guys.
The wikipedia article on touhou games is horrible. I have a link to a touhou wiki in my sig, try that, it's very updated, with translations for most pc games and all.
Yes, PoFV netplay is very fun, but it only tends to work with lan.
Also, I can't beat EoSD on normal with no continues either.
Any more questions and stuffs?

Like this Youmu right here.
