Wii News Channel Active!

Just like the title says, the News Channel is now active!

I was reading on kotaku and joystiq that they were going to activate it on Saturday. But I woke up this morning to the glowing blue light on my Wii. Checked my messages and BAM there it was, the news message telling me to update!

The news channel is pretty sweet. Much better updated than the weather channel atm (for the time being. It did say "Last updated 40 minutes ago")
you get to pick from various news topics, then if you just want to see your regional news, you can use the globe and spin it around again.

Yeah, it's pretty sweet. I also woke up to that glowing blue surprise. It took a little for it to load (about maybe 20 seconds?) but that might have just been because that was my first time logging on.

Whats the news source? Does it say?

Do they filter the news for things that might not be family friendly in Nintendo fashion? If some big murder happens will I see it on the frontpage of my Wii for instance?

The source of the news is Associated Press
They have a two year contract/deal type thing with Nintendo and will provide news in multiple languages for them.

Funny, first article I read was on the Sacramento water poisoning for the "Hold Your Wee for a Wii" contest...good to see Nintendo doesn't care about that and still delivers news...

I'm currently in the process of updating my Wii. Just wish I had started this update before peak traffic on the university wireless. It's at about 42% after about 20 minutes. -_-;

Anyway, it's actually pretty cool. It marks what you've read and doesn't filter out anything I've seen. Even news about the PS3 shows up. Movie reviews in the Entertainment section is pretty cool too. It's like reading a newspaper with a bigger International section and instead of funnies, I can go play a game.

The music in the news channel is really cool. Also, the first news article in the Technology section is about the Wii getting the News Channel.

I believe it is the "one" button. I clicked on the cat during the loading segment and he said that before running off of the box.

And man, the slideshow is badass.
