The Chemist and I will be in review and have the results back to you guys shortly.

P.S. patrickphan, I hear Soulja Boy. I don't know if that was on purpose or not, but I think we should flesh out a full-length remix of it. But you have to sing it.

P.P.S. For reference. YouTube - Soulja Boy Tell`em - Crank That (Soulja Boy)
yeah actually it was a parody-ish song. congrats ronji. I really don't know anything at all so yeah :P

My turn.

Beatdrop
Blew the crap out of me and the rest of the community, not only on a production and sound manipulation level, but on a composition level as well. I would have never expected such a deep piece from farts, quacks, and moo samples. The percussion is tight and varied. Atmosphere is floaty and spacey, yet holds a bit of urgency as well. You took the silliest of projects and created an actual piece. Mad kudos.

patrickphan2
I love parodies, and you were off to a good start here, but things got messy rather quick. I would have toned down the moos so they would come in more like the “Youuuuu~”s in the original. Another thought is that if you slowed down the fart sample, you could have used it as a sub kick. I’m glad you gave it a whirl, but it feels like there could have more thought put into it.
When I put together a piece, I like to think of an image, scene, emotion, or something tangible to tie the song to. In this, I get the farm-animal equivalent of a monster truck derby with Soulja Boy cranking a duck.

ronji
In terms of sample manipulation, you did quite well. I’m actually surprised you got the kick sounding like that. I also appreciate the intricacies, including the reversed sample builds. Kudos on that!
On the composition front, I’m not too moved. It really feels like an FLStudio song. You have all the pieces in place, but overall, it’s pretty basic as a piece.

The Verdict
Sorry guys. We have to pull Helix back in here and hear what he thinks. I vote Beatdrop.

Thanks for the remarks/judging, guys. Feedback is always cool.

Just as a little bit of commentary on my entry:

I actually thought the goal WAS to tweak and manipulate the samples to heart's content and make something substantially unexpected! Haha, anyway, my track came together really quickly. I had a little bit of trouble getting the drums to sound how I wanted them too, but TriDirt's meaty three-band distortion really gave them the DNB oomph that I wanted them to have. The bass was actually fairly easy to create having had a considerable amount of experience using FL's Granulizer plugin in the past. Just a simple matter of pitching, stretching, and carefully picking start/loop points. Of course, Granulizer makes it a lot easier to find all of that than if I were to just load it into a wave editor and try it that way. The string/pad was made by cloning the bass and tweaking it to be thinner and a bit smoother, and obviously by pitching it up a bit more. And as for the other two, uh, "synth" parts, they were a little trickier than everything else. The tonal properties of the original samples are very... awkward, to say the least, so getting something workable and PLAYABLE out of them took a fair share of very, very careful fine tuning. All in all, the whole thing took about a half hour to put together, which is pretty much on par with the speed at which I work on everything I make.

Looking forward to seeing the outcome of this

Well hell, I guess since it's going two ways now I have to step in and decide the winner :P

patrick - I appreciate the parody, and I like that you actually have audible quacks, moos, and farts, but since you didn't come up with your own melody that made you lose a lot of points =( If you would've come up with something original I would have chosen your entry (which would have led to a 3 way tie and a possible 4th judge lol)

beatdrop - your entry is incredible, insane, and inspired. The way you manipulated the samples was great, but you went somewhere I was completely not expecting when Jeremy and I were bouncing around ideas for the contest. I mean it's farts, quacks, and moos! I wanted people to be like "lol farts" and make a silly song, not something serious. I wanted to hear something fun, something that would make me laugh or smile.

ronji - this is more like what I wanted to hear. I can still tell somewhat what the source samples were like. this is a fun little bouncy tune. I don't really have much to say about it.

All in all, there weren't enough entries to this contest. This saddens me. Although patrick's entry was more what I was looking foreward to, and beatdrop's entry was pretty damn cool, I am going to choose Ronji as the winner cause I can totally see some barnyard animals partying to it.

Congratulations Ronji.

Seriously, there should be a lot more people competing/making songs. I mean hell, don't we have about 8-10 artists on the boards(correct me if im wrong)?
