Summer has been very kind to the forum with a surge of activity from lots of great talent - both new and old.
To encourage continued growth and to help break the ice, I would like to propose that we hold more frequent contests. It's a way for all of us to participate in the same context and deal with some awkward audio situations that we would normally not have to face. Ultimately, we become better musicians for it.
Having said that, the warmup works like this:
- Contestants will receive three samples which they can download here. No other samples or sounds (including VSTs) can be used. Allowed samples can be sliced or otherwise modified as desired
- Song length is limited to 0:30 (or thirty seconds)
- Effects (e.g. delay, reverb, etc.) are allowed
- One entree per contestant
- Entrees will be judged by two people, The Chemist and myself. A third judge may be appointed if deemed necessary. Judges will look for technical creativity as well as musical creativity
- Winners will receive bragging rights in a stickied post at the top of the Music Production forum with a link to their submission and URL of choice (i.e. free promo).
The contest begins immediately and ends at 11:59PM on August 9th, 2008.
Got questions, suggestions, or comments? Throw them down!

Aside from the occasional contest, we should place more emphasis on making discussion threads, instead of individual song threads. I think a good start would be to delete all the sticky threads and start an introductions thread from scratch. If I had it my way, I would make it a requirement to post a decent introduction and background to even post on these forums. From there, start bringing in the typical threads (setups, links, etc). The whole erasing thing is more to see who is with the program and whos not, since there are posts from over two years ago in the sticky threads, most from people who haven't posted here in months (or longer).
While having a setup discussion is cool for looking and comparing, there should be a thread dedicated to new equipment coming out, which can range from headphones to synthesizers. Threads dedicated to programs and sequencers. Maybe a thread dedicated completely to synthesizer discussion. Or whatever. The idea is to make people talk and interact with each other, more than what would happen with a contest that no more than four people would join anyway.
We need the forum to be a discussion between musicians/producers (friends even), not just ears for productions.
My opinion anyway, and everything I wrote can be possibly null and void if you take into account the ratio between dedicated musicians/producers, hobbyists, and those just messing around with Fruity Loops (the latter which I predict is the majority).

i look forward to hearing the entries in this contest.

On a totally unrelated note, there sure are some terrible musicians making songs in LMMS.

If people can make an ACTUAL song out of quacks, farts, and moos ... imagine what a little 3xosc love would do.
