Default BoA leads the foray for Asian music into North America under SM Entertainment USA

Got hit by this earlier in September, but did a post on it last night. Ladies and gentlemen - BoA is coming to North America to kick off SM Entertainment's entry into the west.

What do you guys think? Success? Failure?

It all depends on how understandable her English is, I suppose. I remember she had some strange pronunciations with that song she did with Mondo Grosso called Everything Needs Love but doubtless I think it would still be a catchy tune unless they really did a big mess out of it.

My cousin gave me one of her songs and it was ok. It was kind of hard to understand her english(what she was saying too) but her dancing is pretty awesome. I think she'll do decent.

This may have a chance (if they can get it right)

Which obviously means that they'll need songs in English (as they need to attract wider demographics to gain more fanbase and revenue)

With that said

You gotta bring in some Japanese music artists who are fluent in the English language such as Angela Aki, Cho Jyongri, that dude from Teriyaki Boyz (who helped get Kanye West to star in one of their songs) and others out there.

Just my two cents

PI think they're entering too poppy. I really like what I hear, but I can't come up with any current acts that sound like that.

Up here in Vancouver, we're getting a lot of rock mixtures like "I Kissed A Girl" and "Just Dance". I think it might of snuck in a little better a few months ago when Britney was around with "Gimme More". Then again, that's Vancouver.

Only time will tell.

Tell me again why Ryuichi Sakamoto didn't do this better?
Steps to asian success in america:
1 Be talented
2 Win grammys academy awards and golden globes

BAMM APPLETINI

Not to say that asian artists don't need more exposure, they do, but I also seem to recall Pizzicato Five and CORNELIUS did/are doing fine and are pretty highly respected. It's not a language barrier, I don't see this as revolutionary or anything.

It's pop music. It's a super-finicky space to be in with music. It's extremely formulaic and assuming. There's another group, JYPE, trying to do the same thing as SM Entertainment. One of their headliners is a girl called "J Lim". Suffice to say, I'm not too happy about their choice in name.

Still, I think they're doing this much smarter than SM by hitting R&B instead.

They should call that dude named Jero (aka Jerome Charles White Jr.)

Jero - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Haha

Japanese enka being sung by a non-Japanese.

This is indeed epic (almost as epic as Patrick Harlan speaking Japanese all the time).
