Default Good Synthesizer

Should I get a Juno or a Phantom G8 or any other type of synthesizer for my bemani esque music production?

It really depends: What is your experience with synthesizers?

A lot of people jump straight into a 2k synthesizer, and get frustrated trying to learn it.

A lot of those higher end synthesizers (Like the Fantom G8) requires a lot of tweaking and manipulation to tap its real power. I have heard presets from it and besides a couple stereotypical leads and pads, they are pretty weak. Don't forget also that a large reason why its so expensive is that its also a workstation, which if youre using a computer sequencer and not planning on performing live with it, is pretty useless.

Future Retro Revolution Overview

infinitely better than a tb303, and half the price.

Regardless, you need the person's experience in order to recommend them something.

What would you recommend someone who has no experience at all?

I'm going to copy and paste this from a similar thread I posted in:

Roland SH-201 Synthesizer

EXCELLENT synthesizer for anyone, especially beginners. It literally has a road map on it to show you how to make a sound. When it comes to leads and supersaws, you cannot beat this for that price.

Alesis Micron Synthesizer

Gorgeous synthesizer with very warm analog sounds. The pads on this are phenomenal. Unfortunately, not as beginner friendly as the SH-201 (Although the presets on this are really good).

I have personally used both, and if you do decide to buy a synthesizer, you cannot go wrong with either one of them. After I buy my Access Virus TI Module, I'm definitely going to save up to buy both of them

seconding the alesis micron
additionally, any synthesizer from novation will be amazing and does not take a whole shit-ton of effort to get great sounds. i have the a-station, but the x-station and xiosynth (both of which are marketed as both controllers and synths) sound amazing.

I have never used a synthesizer, however am pretty good on a simple piano. I have tried using frooty loops XXL, but everything I get out of that sounds very poor. It feels like the sounds i am using are crap, and only having seen one synth, the fantom, what i heard was amazing in comparison. I have dont know anything about getting the music onto a computer either, Im starting from scratch. Do they sell these synths you are recomending at any stores that are easily to find? (such as best buy or something?)

If you're looking for better sounds, I'd skip the hardware synth and pick up reFX Vanguard or NI Massive instead. reFX Juno also holds it own. They pump out a lot of comparable sounds for a fraction of the price and take up zero physical space.

If you're into a hardware feel and some unique sounds and manipulation opportunities, then go ahead and nab one of the synthesizers mentioned above. The Virus TI comes highly recommended from me - though it's a bit pricey.

Get both the Alesis Micron and the microkorg. Scratch that, those two AND the Novation X-station (that's the $300 one right?). Get them in the order you like. Alesis and Novation have a shitload of sounds, microkorg is, well, just fun. The more synthesizers, the better. I know it sounds odd but really, that's how it works with me. They're all under $1000.

But do you have a equencer or moniters or MIDI interface yet? And also, what type of BEMANI music? Gabba? Trance? TOMOSUKE-esque Techno Jazz? Techno?

EDIT: Also, no they will not be found at Best Buy. I like my local Sam Ash (and for that matter local anything. Always buy from independant shops when buying instruments), but Guitar Center is great.

Also, if you're willing to pull out $1300 for a synth, get a Nord or a KORG Radias. They're both fantastic. Also, moog's are just... fucking... fuck dude, they're godly. And $3000.

Gotta remember that i have no idea what most of this is. I just know what the guy told me at best buy. Also, i would like to be able to do a good range of music, but my general 'sound' is very Asaki/seiya murai. I tend to make twisted and sad songs, since its mainly those parts in my life that inspire me.

There are a lot of Best Buy stores that have a "Best Buy for Music" or something store-within-a-store now. They sell guitars, drums, synths, dj equipment, amps, speakers, etc.

I saw one of those up in northern Virginia. They had a good number of brand-name synthesizers and amplifiers up for demonstration.

... hm. You an FLStudio person? Have you ever tried Sytrus? Tweak a few parameters and you can have some really emo bells and keys.
