1. Yes I'm running XP (Vista is terrible <_<).

2. Its working out AWESOME.. I really dont understand why you would need more than 2 cores. I think 2 cores at 3.0+ is better than 4 at 2.5 since you wont be needing all 4 anyways. I know some audio programs support multi threading but really.. more GHz is better in my oppinion.

I run Reason (full of synths and samples [like Reason Pianos.. huge samples there]) rewired in to Live ( full of vst's and effects and stit) and it runs 100% smooth. I can even be doing like 10 other things at the same time and I have no lag.

Sure.. a nice powerhouse would be good, but you dont really need a powerhouse computer to do music production. I think my computer was pretty much perfect (without going overboard and such)

But then again, this computer suits MY needs perfectly fine. Your needs might be different?

Whoa! That's certainly a powerhouse computer. Thanks for the rundown... I'll have to start looking myself.

Are their any websites similar to Newegg.com for Canadian users?

Give NCIX.com or atic.ca a shot.

They're both based here in Vancouver though, so you'll probably incur a wee bit for shipping.

P.S. RAM > Processing speed for music.

Id say they are about hand and hand. Need alot of both.

Need lots of ram to store all the samples your production is currently using.
Need lots of CPU to calculate a stream everything you are doing at the time.

Now even if you want dual monitor, you dont really need a good GPU, just one good enough for dual monitor. The only reason to get a good GPU is if you intend to play games on the same computer.
Any CD/DVD drive will usually do. (as long as it reads and burns). Again I really dont think you'd need a quad. A good dual is good enough.

Also, sound card.. well yea if you want. (I dont really need one... yet). I say get a sound card, when you actually need what one can offer.

Also.. I never needed any after market coolers. The stock cooler has been good enough for me.

Here I found my receipt for my computer.

ASUS P5E-VM HDMI mATX LGA 775 G35 DDR2 PCI-E16 2PCI-E1 PCI SATA2 RAID Sound HDMI (Motherboard)- $138.99

OCZ Platinum XTC PC2-6400 4GB 2X2GB DDR2-800 CL5-4-4-15 DDR2 240PIN Dual Channel (RAM) - $129.99

Western Digital Caviar 750GB SATA2 7200RPM 16MB 8.9MS Hard Drive 3 Year MFR Waranty (HD) - $153.99

Intel Xeon E3110 Dual Core Processor LGA775 3.0GHZ Wolfdale 1333FSB 6MB Retail (CPU) - $249.99 (This one is the same as the E8400. The model I got was the server model, the E8400 is the Home PC type Model).

Total (after shipping/tax/etc) - $723.49

(Note: I bought this at ncix).

Anyways, this is pretty much the box itself. If you want dual monitors, then you need to get a vid card + 2 monitors. If you want a soundcard, then + sound card. etc.

The only thing I personally bought after this was A monitor (I still only have one. It was a tube to LCD replacement). Again this has worked wonders for me.

I hope this helps you in your search.

again, depends on what you need one for.

Sounds card that come on motherboards these days are usually good enough. For the most part "sound" cards these days allow you to simultaneously record from different sources, allow you to directly connect a midi cable to it, etc.

Sound cards (like CreAtive shit) arent really all that necessary.

ASIO4All does an amazing job when you don't have an uber soundcard, too.

Alternatively, you can get an audio interface which can double as a soundcard. Some big synths (like the Virus series) act as soundcards, too..
