Default itt VST Recommendations

I remember we started doing this on 6.0, but it didn't really take off. Let's see if anything changed.

Okay, here's my story. I'm now functioning off my laptop. The laptop, while it has a nice 120 GB hard drive, does not have enough space for me to get every VST willy-nilly on the internets.

It is also no secret that there are a lot of crap VSTs out there, more so than quality ones. At the other end of the spectrum, though, are those awesome VSTs (like Syrus, Slayer 2, etc.) that cost too much for a college-student budget.

So, since FL is the endorsed music making machine of the forum, the focus here will be a collection of the finest VSTs (especially ones at reasonable/nonexistant prices) and their respective locations on the internet.

I will begin.

My number one helper thus far is:

Font! SF2 Player (Scroll to the bottom of the page.) I'm cheap and have the Producer Edition of Fruity Loops, so the built-in soundfont player is only a demo. Which sucks. So this is a basic Soundfont player that works and is free. Biggest problem I've had is that sometimes it doesn't name the soundfont channels properly. But that's only happened once or twice, and it's pretty easy to find such bugs.

Aaaaand... that's as far as I've gotten. I've been mostly using the built-in VSTs and samplers in FL, which I know suck. But I'm poor, and can't afford $150 things. I've tried google, but that yields a ton of nonfunctional or otherwise crap VSTs. So, from your experiences, which ones are worth playing with?

Kyrandian: <3 <3 <3 <3

also, some of the synths that come with FL have some decent hidden power behind them, but it takes a lot of effort. There was one artist on here that used only FL Native synths and made some fairly impressive works, but I forget who schwas.

I think that's Etherstyle, but after listening to Eshmasesh's stuff again, it sounds like he just uses FL natives. But I could be wrong. I remember [name] saying that you can get them sounding decent if you throw enough layers and filters onto them... but that's the sort of stuff I'm weak with.

And Kyrandian: THANK YOU. That's EXACTLY the type of thing I was looking for.

Now, ideally, I could use a good string-sounding synth. Anyone who's used Soundfonts knows the limitations those give you... I'd rather have one VST than 10 soundfonts to get the sounds I'm looking for.

That said, I still love soundfonts. For brass instruments and drums especially, they are excellent. As soon as I get my old soundfonts over from my desktop, I'll track them down for all of you. I remember, though, a number came from http://www.hammersound.net. Rarely updated, but still a number of quality SF2's. I will find them later... must pack for college now. Moving in tomorrow.

It's good. You get to draw the waves for that synth right in the vst window. Fun and creative and.... heck you know what, get everything from there, all of them have been pretty sweet so far.
