Question mixing problem when DJing

Can anyone explain what is exactly going on when I try to mix two songs and sometimes the bass beat seem to 'cancel each other out'? The two songs are both trance (both Tiesto, as a matter of fact), and when the mixing is up there's just a light 'putt' where the bass beat should be. Is it a problem with the hardware? Or is it expected for songs with similar beats?

Thanks

Try turning the bass level down on the track that your mixing in, and then when you crossover between the two songs, bring the bass back up.

This is what's called "phasing". What's happening is you've got the tracks almost perfectly aligned, but not quite, so the kickdrums are quite literally cancelling each other out. Nudge one of the tracks either forward or backward just a little and that'll either fix the problem or knock the tracks out of sync. In the event of the latter, nudge the track the other way.

Hope that helps.
